Go to a Petsmart - they have adoptions on the week ends and people there to help you choose a pet. Some small dogs are very hyper - Kids are worse on little dogs and can hurt them without even trying. A mediam size dog is better for kids - like a begal or mixed breed. Dogs around children take a lot of punishment - sitting on laying on pulling hair and tails - of'course you will not let this happen right?

Bichon Frise---i have one. There really good with kids and other animals, and they LOVE attention. There small dogs 9½ to 11½ inches at the shoulder, but mine is a littler taller. they weight up to 20 pounds. There perfect if you live in an apartment. They are gentle mannered, sensitive, playful and affectionate. A cheerful attitude is the hallmark of the breed and one should settle for nothing less. But they require a lot of brushing. But there hypo-allergenic, meaning they have hair instead of fur, they also dont shed

Read the AKC website. It will give you a good description of every breed. Think about how much time or money you are willing to put into grooming (poodles and cocker spaniels require more grooming than boston terriers or pugs), as well as things like the dog's personality and what purpose they were bred for origionally. Finding a local dog club is also a good source of information. Good luck!

Shelter mutts make the best pets.
Call ahead to the shelter to see if they have "family rooms" or if you can bring your dog to meet and greet potential play mates. That way you can be sure they get along and your pets can choose their own companion.
Shelter dogs have to be temperment tested which includes if they are cat and other animal safe. The attendants spend a lot of time with all the dogs and can help you find the perfect dog for your family. You will be saving a life and getting lots of "extras" for one low price.

i'd recommend either a boston terrier or a miniature pincers. I've been bitten by both dachshunds and mini poodles when i was little (trying to pet them), so i would recommend against those breeds. a chihuahua may be another good choice, but they're usually a one person dog. if all else fails, go with a mutt-they make the best dogs!
good luck!

Westies, White West Highland Terriers, are excellent with kids, are extremely loyal, do not shed (they have 2 layers of fur), great guard dogs, and love to play. They have personalities the size of a great pyranese! My parents bought our first westie when I was 8, and he just died this year...they live very long lives. (I'm 24). Depending if you get a male or female, it should not weigh more than 28 lbs.

I suggest a shih-tzu. They are adorable, love-able, great with babies & kids. They don't bark alot, not like a poodle. I have one of each. Our Shih-Tzu is about 11lbs, She loves everyone. The only downfall with her is she is a little hyper when some one new comes to the house.. This only last for 1/2 hour or so.

I think small cocker spaniels are really good family pets. They are not to big. They are very loyal and protective over their human family. You can keep them inside or outside. They require little grooming. No matter how old they get they're still like little puppies inside.
