I don't think anybody starts by saying "I think I'll be a drug addict".
With narcotics- heroin, morphine, opium, Oxycontin, percodan, vicodan, etc, the addiction process is physical. That means the body becomes habituated to the drug, and when the drugs leave the body, you become physically ill. Among junkies it is known as "kicking". It is quite hellish. Nausea, the squirts, muscle cramping and inability to sleep are the main symptoms. Like the worst flu you ever had, but worse.
The other two drugs that people mostly get addicted to are meth and cocaine. Meth gives you a big boost of energy, as well as producing a lot of pleasure, as it juices up the synapses of the brain, by releasing nuerotransmitters and increasing the sensitivity of the receptors. Meth creates a tolerance for the drug, the user ends up doing more and more. The problem with all that chemical energy is you will be very, very tired when you stop tweaking. And depressed, have a hard time concentrating, etc. Every day life won't seem very interesting and pleasurable.
Cocaine also produces a lot of energy, euphoria and pleasure. It has the same burn out effect.
Drug addicts are always trying to get back to the magic of the first high "when it was fun", even long after its no fun anymore.
Another addiction mechanism is escapism. If you find a relief from problems, whatever they are, through drugs, then instead of dealing with those problems, it might become a habit to do more drugs. By doing this, most problems get worse.
A lot of drug addicts have had something really bad happen at some point in life- molested, raped, neglected, abused. A bad divorce, death of someone close.
Such misfortune can turn the corner from casual "using" to full flight from reality.
Best way to not get addicted is don't use.
Unchecked addiction leads to ...jails, institutions (psych ward) and death. Inevitably/

My personal opinion is that a person can become an addict before they even do drugs. Some people are just more apt to becoming a drug addict...people who have dependent personailities, people who are bipolar, who have depression issues, etc...i'm not saying everyone does, but people like this are more prone to it, i mean, i'm bipolar and to be honest i don't always make the best decisions because i don't always have rational thinking. Some people just have addictive personalities. I'm an addict and i don't care to admit it. I've been in rehab before for meth, which i kicked that habit....but even so, i still have an addictive personality. Addictive people can become dependent on anything, it doesn't just have to be drugs, it can be people, sex, a certain routine, shopping, etc....anything that you feel you have to have in your life in order to maintain your happiness is something you're addicted to...that's how you start being a drug addict, in my opinion. Because you can depend on things around you for so long before you realize that every thing is subject to change, and being an addict, change is scary for us, so most usually drift on to drugs because they don't change...they're always there. Addictive people are always looking for a way to feel different than what they do.

Usually the most addicting drugs are the ones that release endorphins in your brain. Endorphins is a chemical that creates extreme happiness and euphoria in your brain. Drugs that produce these feelings don't last long at all and if you don't keep your high...you "crash" into a sudden depression when the endorphins decrease back to normal. And drug addicts continue to use to try to maintain that feeling of happiness. That's how addiction happens.

Well it depends on the drug, for example marijuana is a psychological dependence, its determined by your personal experience.
others like mdma, alcohol, free base, cocaine.
are physically dependent. and you may be addicted from the first couple of times, or even from the very first.
nevertheless it depends on the individual.
this may help resolve your questions.

Well... Let's see... If:
Person + Drug + Repeated Use(Lack of common sense - Morals^2) = Drug Addiction
Then, in order to reduce the number of drug addicts, we simply must lower the number of people. I'll get my gun...

People that are weak allow someone to tempt them. Sometimes it happens because of an injury and they get adicted to the pain killers. There are all kinds of ways a person can become a drug addict. The thing is to keep control of your life.
