I need to know how I can increase my self confidence. I'm going to try out for the school musical and I'm soo shy. I have to sing part of a song by myself and I don't know why but I feel like I just can't. I've been singing in chorus in school for five years and I haven't overcome this fear yet, I need to. I just need people to tell me things I can do to help me do this. Thank you all in advance.

Aw. Well, in some ways confidence is earned. One way to earn your confidence is to give that audition your best shot.

OK, sorry for getting all Yoda on you. There's some other things you can try. Basically, you want to get yourself in a psychological state of mind that is as calm as possible. Here's a few tips: avoid caffeine the day of your audition, get regular exercise, wake and sleep at the same time, eat healthy, laugh, watch some comedy.

If you're really nervous... you could always *ahem* rub one out. That should probably get you in a relaxed and calm mood.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you - good luck!

To increase overall self-confidence takes a lot of time...believe me, I am not there. However...I am a really good pretender. No one ever knows how insecure I am, though I have tried to overcome it. Some things that really help are:
--Believe it or not, practice, practice, practice. If you are really, really solid on your piece and don't need to worry about knowing it...a lot of stress will be taken off and you will be able to focus on giving a good performance.
--Be really warmed up, when your voice is easy and fluid, it also takes stress and worry off.
--When you go to audition, though you may have your heart set on a role, go to it wanting for the good of the school, ready to take any role. When you go with that attitude then nothing can get you down, and it will free you from worry...also then you will be able to truly free to give them the performance which will convince whoever you are singing for that they HAVE TO put you in that role.
--Become one with piece. Don't let someone teach you how to sing it. There is no right or wrong way. However you can best identify with something and put your whole soul into it. When you have done this, that is when music can really touch people and connect with others. It is also bound to stick out and be a more memorable piece.
--Have fun with it. Decide you are not going to care about this audition. You are there to enjoy it and to be a part of it. Make sure you love what you are singing...it will show.

Good luck! I am facing major auditions at my college right now as well and am terrified! I am working on taking my own advice...I know it can help both of us! :) We can do it! One day we will know how cool we are!

First please don't allow the present situation to deteriorate. Ensure that.

Take the following steps, which my Mentor suggested to me long back:-

Quote:

One can either gain confidence or lose confidence. One should, therefore, know how to fine-tune the mind accordingly. Self-confidence cannot be gained without physical self-discipline and mental control. Besides that, one should know how to nurture very healthy, noble and constructive thoughts, habits and traits. Also one should build strong moral behaviors. These are the basic requirements to build self-confidence.

Then one should only see the brighter side of future. I mean one should not look back about the darker side of the shadow. Avoid darker side of viewing things. Be positive in attitude with a noble vision. Besides, one should not entertain unnecessary confusion, doubt or fear in his mind. The mind should not be disturbed or polluted because of impurities. Moreover, he should lead a righteous life or principled life or qualitative life. Periodically impurities should be flushed out from the mind. Then only mind will be able to generate ideal thoughts, ideas and feelings.

Thoughts, words and deeds should match with each other. I mean it should be homogeneous. Thus one should never adopt doubt standards. Double standards or split personally may sometime lead to destabilize the basic moral foundations in a man.

Fully utilize your existing available time, knowledge, mental energy, experience, skill, maturity, intelligence, acumen, ingenuity and other resources only on some or the other right pursuits in future.

Pl. analyzes everything and try to come out of this problem by some self-efforts.

Practice whenever you get the chance. Tape record yourself singing and listen to it, with and without music. Find the parts you need to work on. Ask your vocal coach or teacher to listen to you singing solo and critique you. You have time to do this-take advantage of the time you have before the tryout. It doesn't matter in the long run if you make it or not, but to be true to yourself you have to try! Who knows-you might have an awesome set of pipes you've been hiding! Go for it! You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. And if you don't make it, no big deal-you tried! And that is worth everything!

Well, you are important to God and just as special as anyone else out there. You know that person you admire?, I am quite sure he or she has struggled with or is still struggling with the same issue. As far as your singing ability, get the opinion of someone you trust. If you can sing, do it with all your heart not caring what anyone says. If you cannot sing, find your talent and do that whole heartedly! Remember, you're just as special to God as the next person.

Take the risk. If you survive, you will see how you made up the fear. Incidentally, read all of the book entitled
Your Erroneous Zone

by Wayne Dyer

It has a lot about self esteem and fear.

try not to think about it as performing, instead view as communication between you and the audience. try to establish eye contact, and make them feel what you feel when you sing the song. just give it your all. there's nothing to lose, so just enjoy and let lose!
