If you have kids going to day camps, or if you have worked as summer camp counselor, how much do each kid typically tip per counselor? (There are a lot of counselors!)

Honestly, I'm surprised at all the answers where they have never heard of tipping a camp counselor. Perhaps everyone else is not, like me, from NY (where everything costs more to begin with). I was a camper 20 years ago and I remember my mom tipping the counselors then. I was a counselor 15 years ago and remember getting tips (around $5-$10 a child, but that was 15 years ago!!).

Now I tip all of my sons counselors, the bus driver, the bus counselor and the group leaders. Yes, it adds some expense but they kept my son busy, active and SAFE all summer long. The counselors are usually all kids going off to college and I'm sure they appreciate the extra money. I now tip about $20/counselor.

I never heard of tipping camp counselors. I have heard of giving gifts when your child is leaving after having a good experience. Gift cards, cookies, candy, little amenities.

Dang thats a lucky councelor! Lol. I've worked summer camp all summer for the Y. Honestly, we don't expect tips, we get a bonus check anyway. So don't feel bad if you can't or don't want to afford it. Have the child make a special picture, or buy a small gift or a gift card. Sometimes (depending on who it is) a picture or card/small gift means more than 10-15 dollars. Just tell them how much you appreciated them interacting with your child.
It goes farther then you would think. :)

I was a cap counselor, I never got a tip. Depends on the gratuity policy of the camp.

I did all sorts of counselor jobs and never was tipped. I don't really think that's the norm, unless it's at some fancy place. Often times, they're not allowed to accept anything.

do these counselors work for tips or pay? a thank you note to the camp should do the trick and if you want to pay them a tip then send a donation to the camp in your child's name.
