I hope you have gone to the ER by now, but if not, what are you waiting for?

There is a technique to replace the jaw properly in the joint. The longer it sits outside the joint capsule, the more likely that permanent damage will be done and this will keep happening.

On the odd outside chance that you are at the top of a mountain in the Sierra Nevada and you are using a wireless internet connection and can't come down until the guide returns with your pack burro, I'll tell you a little about what needs to be done.

Someone needs to wrap their fingers in a towel or wear heavy gloves and grab your brother's jaw around the molar teeth with their fingers. Then, their thumbs need to stabilize the jaw under the chin. Then, this brave soul needs to press down on the molars while pressing up on the chin while watching for the precise second when it is necessary to get their fingers the heck out of the way. When the jaw closes, it can snap back into place hard enough that someone might lose a finger.

SOME people can nurse their jaw back into a closed position by trying to move their own chin from side to side until the jaw bone recaptures the part of the jaw joint that is locking them out of position. If they can do that, the closure is not so dramatic, but it is not always possible to do this.

After this is all done and you return to civilization, your brother needs to consult with a dentist or physician about treatment to aid in healing.

I have had this happen more times than I can count. My jaw was injured in a car accident affecting the lower jaw and some nerves. I especially have a had time going to a dentist in which cause I know my jaw is going to lock again. You can lay back, relax your jaw and gently pull it forward and up until it closes. This needs medical attention before nerves are disrupted like mine. The jaw disc could be worn now giving you the problem. There is a test they do to check the disk. There is nothing you can do for it, but to see a doctor.

It is probably a slipped disc in the jaw, at the TMJ joint.
Go in to the doctor and have them move the disc back in to place.
Lockjaw would lock the jaw closed with intractable pain.

He will need to go to the ER...I believe it has actually popped out of place. This happened to me a few years ago when I had the flu and was vomiting and because of the wait in the ER (and the stalling trying to relax for it to go back by itself), it was out of place for 9 hours. They will give him muscle relaxers and if it doesn't go back after that, they will give him something like morphine and physically put it back in place.

it is probably TMJ I would use an ice pack. Eat only soft foods and not drink thru a staw and also see a doctor to be on the safe side.
