"Peanuts are legumes!

Yes. Peanuts, along with beans and peas, belong to the single plant family, Leguminosae. Legumes are edible seeds enclosed in pods. As a group, they provide the best source of concentrated protein in the plant kingdom. While their physical structure and nutritional benefits more closely resemble that of other legumes, their use in diets and cuisines more closely resembles that of nuts..."

Although their texture on the tongue is similar to nuts, the definition of a "nut" would have to disagree with the infamous "peanut" being officialy a "nut". It is, however, a "legume", it grows underground. LIke potatoes, we don't call them nuts, eh? Wait, why call potatoes nuts? You would have to be a nut to call a potato a nut... Never mind :P. Hope I helped!

They are a legume, and to a previous poster, the peanuts themselves do grow underground after the stems drop down once the flowers have finished blooming. You have to dig to harvest them.

there are tree nuts (walnuts, pecans, alomonds) and there are cashews (a tree nut that actually isn't a nut, but a weird kind of "apple" stem), and peanuts are something else again, a ground nut.

Nut is a very loose term.
