I have not read any reviews of multi-purpose copy-printer-scanners in quite some time so it's possible they have improved; but several years ago when I did read about them the consensus was that while they did a fair job the quality wasn't as good as separate devices. I have used Umax, Epson and currently a Canon flatbed scanner and have been pleased with all of them.
I found a site that may be useful.

It appears to be for the high end professional which may be more than you need.

You should get the HP All In One. It is a printer, scanner, copier and it's very easy to use and doesn't cost much. If you want to pay a little more money they have one that faxes too but I don't think you need that.

Staples & Office Depot is selling the Brother MFC-210c all in one unit for only $49.99 after rebates.
It's a Flat bed scanner, Printer, Copier & Fax.
Another plus is that the Cyan Yellow & Magenta cartridges are separate so you don't ahev to buy the all in once color cartridges when only one color runs out

You should get a multifunction printer/scanner/copier. They are pretty cheap these days, you can find a good one for around $100-120.
Check out these sites for good prices and customer reviews:

I recommend anything from HP, Lexmark, or Epson

Yes, I used to swear by HP scanners. But the last two ALL-In-One HP printers that I installed had such huge installation programs, that I dare not recommend HP anymore.
I would go to STAPLES or other store that does not hassle you with returns, and try one. But ask about their return policy first, so you can TAKE IT BACK. (Costco is awesome with returns too)

Calling it a "desktop" scanner gives you an idea of two things: 1. how big it is (small enough to fit on your desk, not like a $50,000 professional machine that takes up the space of a large professional photocopy machine) and 2. its orientation (sits flat on the desk, like a book lying flat, not like one standing up on its edge).

You can get an all-in-one flatbed scanner, copier, printer from most every brand of printers. Lexmark has one for about $40.
