Some of these answers scare me. I wish people would give this question more thought. Terrorism is not something that will ever truly be defeated. We should also realize that not all terrorists are muslims (remember Oklahoma City and Columbine). There is only one way that we can combat terrorism in the long run, and sadly, noone in Washington embraces this plan. It is impossible to kill every terrorist, because as you kill them, their friends and family are enticed to become terrorists too. We need to focus our policy on plans to remove our dependence on oil. It is the main reason that we need such a presence in the Middle East. This would not be "giving in" to the terrorists because it is something we need to do anyways. It is important to kill terrorist leaders when we get the chance, but we also need to take steps to break the back of the terrorism problem. Some other ideas:
Make a palestinian state
Support the poor in muslim countries
Encourage student exchange from muslim countries
Place a muslim into a position of power in the United States
Make some of our alliances with Muslim countries more publicized (such as with Qatar and Morocco).

Not all Muslims are terrorists, and while the Qu'ran can be read by some to explicitly instruct violence, there are many practicing Muslims all over the world who do not kill themselves in suicide attacks, and who live at peace with people of all religions. By being a bigot, some Americans are helping to fuel the hatred that pours out of the Middle East. We must realize that we cannot eliminate Islam, so we must learn to live alongside our Islamic neighbors and find better ways to combat terrorism at its roots in the long run.

Can the Western what win the war against what. Can the what alliance win the what against terror? None of it really makes any sense if you look at it objectively. Not that long ago we were told to be terrified of the Evil Russian empire - especially whilst they were engaged in a war against those brave mujahideen fighters in errr Afghanistan.

Anyway as long as we have fought with one nation or another one thing is for sure - we have always turned a good profit selling them arms. This scam is known as the carousel. You divide the world to suit your business interests sell everyone arms at one time or another (even send military advisers to teach them how to use them - as Mrs Thatcher did not so long ago when she sanctioned the SAS to go and train the Khmer Rouge - AFTER the genocide) swop sides when it looks like there might be some political or capital gain to be had and carry on with the whole dirty game. The big players on the carousel at the moment have realised that since they have no enemy to focus our minds on anymore then they'd better invent one. the War on terror. Sounds good doesn'rt it? It's spreading, those terrorists are multiplying. They used to be Marxist revolutionaries now they are Muslim fascists. We must defeat them!

Never mind that it is our own Government that is destroying the fabric of our lives with their wars, authoritarian measures and the exploitation of cheap foriegn labour. Its all hotting up, now we are all being invited to scrap our civil rights, to spy on our neighbours, to support our troops as they patrol the mountains of Afghanistan.

Ofcourse all of this has much to do with the establishments very real fears about the impending energy crisis, the rise of China and India and their own economies relative stagnation.

Terrorism as a phenomenon can only be stopped when the biggest gangsters of all leave the world stage, before they get us all wiped off it for good

Moslem's that are first generation citizens of countries like the U.S., France, Great Britain, Australia have to be in touch with the reason they immigrated to such countries and stop terrorism themselves, if they don't their lives will be the same as the places they thought they had left behind. Basically the insurgency in Iraq and Hezbollah in Lebanon are carrying on guerrilla warfare. How successful was the UK against the USA in the War for Independence? Not! How successful was Russia against the jihadists in Afghanistan ? NOT! A guerrilla war cannot be won unless moderate Moslem's get involved. Having a
Taliban style Theocracy throughout the world would probably be deadly for millions of non-Muslims. It would probably make the Holocaust seem like recess on the school playground.

The thing is we all go on about Muslims being terrorists. Yes some are. So do we bomb every Muslim country into oblivion? Then of course the IRA supported by many in the USA so lets bomb them in Ireland and the USA. Etta in Spain OK lets blow Spain off the map. South America is full of them get rid. Haven't thought about Africa and Asia sure should be a few there. So whats left, Blair President of the World. Only problem a lot of this mess was caused by us as terrorists going into other countries. We will never see peace until the leaders of every nation stand up and say its what they all want. Heaven may be our only choice for peace.

Actually there is no Western Alliance. The United States, Britain, and Israel are ad best ad hoc allies.

"giving them more reasons to fight back"- Ever read the Qu'ran? Occupying and conquering infidels is one of their main reasons. Mahammed wasn't like jesus, he had sex with a 9yr old girl, he advocated not forgiving his enemies like Jesus but in killing them. Terrorism is a tactic not a group. Terrorists are MUSLIMS. Want to end terrorists? Mercilessly kill all the terrorists, their families, the countries that support them, and the mosques and imam's that create them. Thats how we can win the war on terror...by waging a vicious violent crusade that eradicates them instead of policing them. I mean for godsake...read your history! Islam has NEVER peacefully coexisted with any religion, what makes you think they will have a sudden change of heart?

Just so you know....Jews and Christians have to pay a special tax in muslim lands and are treated like second class citizens. The Western Alliance is fueling the terrorists but its by being weak that is making them come on. Vultures smell death. As the gaullic chief once said to the Romans ever it conquered the city,"Woe to the vanquished."

Please do not divide the world on the basis of West and East. There are countries like Pakistan and Japan who are crucial for Alliance. It should be either referred as Coalition or Alliance to give a broader impression. To solve this problem of Terrorism,we need to go to the root causes of the problem and these must be solved with Justice.Problem of Palestinian State,Kashmir and Chechen be resolved and I am sure that terrorism would finish.

Terrorism, in this form and with the technology available will never be stopped.
Might it possibly be an idea to look at why the attacks?
And try to deal with that, on a ground level, rather than through eminently untrustworthy politicians.
The other alternative is to follow Stephen Hawkin and move into space, they can have whats left of the planet to fight over.

Islamic terrorists do not seek freedom but the imposition of Islam. It is time the west woke up to the fact that the greatest threat to our way of life is Islam and what it will do WHEN they gain power in our towns and cities.
Jesus said, Love your enemies, forgive those who sin against you. Islam says, death to the infidel. We can win the war when we begin to fight it on the spiritual level.

Your question is framed in the terms of the Bush administration. See how easily it sneaks up on you?

Look, all war grows out of lack of individual opportunity, poverty, hunger, and despair. It is formed by a lack of respect for human rights, greed, and hegemony.

Terrorist organizations and state sponsors of terrorists feed on these problems by finding enemies to target for blame and retribution. The Islamic states, by clinging to a concept of religious purity and rejecting the influences of the "infidels"--including not only cultural factors but even many advances in science and technology over several hundred years, have fallen behind the West, from a development standpoint. For these reasons, having US air bases in Arabia or in Iraq does not help to deflect the "Great Satan" label.

Fighting terrorism requires
- Enhancing security and seeking out and eliminating terrorists (a policing function).
- Seeking diplomatic solutions to regional conflicts when possible.
- Promoting human rights, education, and development worldwide.

Of these three issues, the Bush administration has underfunded the first (distracted by and squandering our treasury in Iraq), given short shrift to the second, and built a very checkered record on the third. You cannot come to a conclusion on the probable success of this effort based on the Bush record. They are immersed in a cesspool of sectarian violence in Iraq, have scorned our potential allies, and fueled the fires of hate for the US in the Islamic world. Maybe George Bush truly believes that the go-it-alone war and occupation of Islamic Iraq equates to a war on terrorism. Many others do not.

Regarding the statement by solitas777 about Mohammed that "he advocated not forgiving his enemies like Jesus but in killing them," in the first case that would have been difficult since Jesus rose to heaven hundreds of years before Mohammed's birth. In the second case he had great respect for Jesus. Osama bin Laden perverts and distorts the message of Islam by advocating murder of innocents. You won't find that in the Koran.

no, this is the same terrorist groups that have been doing terroist acts for over 30 years. And they merely wish to destroy anyone who is not Islamic.

But you will never stop a single man from strapping a bomb on and blow something up.
