Here are some tips. Obviously you can take a sleeping pill near bed time. Make sure you don't eat anything 3 hours before you go to bed. Don't exercise before you go to bed. You could drink a glass of milk to help you fall asleep. other than that, you can focus while in bed on NOT moving at all. Make sure you don't move a muscle and your body will naturally fall asleep. Hope this helps.

Write down everything that happened to you during the day, and if anything is on your mind (as far as plans for the next day, etc) write it all down. It may be a psychological thing.
Other remedies, warm milk, a few small pieces of chocolate (your sugar levels go up then when you come down you will get tired)
Don't watch TV or use the computer 30-45 minutes before bed, start winding down, maybe a hot bath, etc.

Don't sleep with a TV or radio on.
Don't read in bed.
Go to bed and get up at the same time daily.
Set your thermostat to a cool temperature.
Keep your room as dim/dark as possible.
Stop eating and exercising at least 3 hours prior to bed.
Once in bed, if you have not fallen asleep in about 15 minutes, get up and watch tv or read for 15 minutes then try again.

You've already gotten a melatonin suggestion, but I will elaborate.
Melatonin naturally occurs in the body. It is released to induce sleep. Your body isn't producing enough to get you through a period of high stress/anxiety (whatever). I have heard doctors make this recommendation. Go to a natural foods/supplement store (GNC would be a good start). Buy NATURAL melatonin tablets in 2 mg dosage. Take before bedtime.
A 2 mg dosage is low enough to not affect you the next morning, and just enough to push you over the edge to go to sleep. I have taken it in extremely high stress situations, and have dropped off to sleep in 10 to 15 minutes. The next morning, I awake feeling great with no drowsiness.

It's good that you're not consuming caffeine. Try drinking a glass of milk. Sometimes I listen to music before I fall asleep.

Sometimes if I eat too soon before I go to bed it will keep me up at night. I try to read before I go to sleep, or turn on the tv showing some documentary that I have NO interest in whatsoever, usually bores me to sleep!

Melatonin is the sleep hormone. It wont leave you hungover in the morning like sleeping pills.
Costco sells 5mg tabs. Take one 3 or so hours before bedtime.

Don't lay in the bed all day, get up by 6:00 AM, and you'll sleep like a baby!

try reading a book. or just take some time out and relax before you go to sleep. You may even need to take Tylenol pm or something before you go to bed to help you go to sleep faster.
