They are super smart.
Extremely smart.
I don't think you understand how smart these dogs are, like child smart. They have the ability to think through problems and act accordingly. They don't jump fences, they learn how to unlock them.
They also need an EXTREME amount of exersize.
When you put those two things together, you have a dog that can't be left in a back yard all day. They will be miserable. Barking excessively, digging, spinning, destroying stuff. This is a breed that needs a job. They would be lovely hunters.
They were bred to herd sheep all day, everyday, rain or shine and they love to work. They are excellent pets when they get enough stimulation. After hunting season ends, you will still have a hyper, smart dog that needs something to do. Get a book called "Dog Tricks For Dummies". In the back there are activities and contests that you can join.
I work in a vet clinic and volunteer with the SPCA. A lot of these dogs are given away because of the activity level.
Consider rescue. There are great dogs that need homes and you get lots of "extras" when you adopt.

Housebreaking will be a breeze, border collies are one of the smartest breeds out there. But that is also their downfall. They require a lot of attention and they will get bored VERY easily. If you can't keep your border collie busy he will find other ways to keep himself busy (hint: these often involve unwanted and destructive behavior) Border collies are not hunting dogs, they are herding dogs... this means they will try to herd up just about anything... ducks, other dogs, birds, cattle, sometimes children. They may also nip as a result of their hurding instincts but this is usually not a problem as long as they are trained young to never herd or bite a person. They can be great dogs, but if you are a busy person and won't have a lot of time to spend with your new puppy, you will want to consider another more relaxed breed.
Again, they are highly intelligent, this is both their best and most troublesome quality... truthfully they are best suited for farm life, but they can make great pets if you have the time and dedication that is needed

Border Collies are extremely intelligent dogs. They love games that use their minds. The are also very high energy dogs and you must be ready to take them for long walks at least twice a day. Walking will help to not only work off some of their energy but any frustrations they may have. Make sure a Border Collie will fit your life style before you get one. If you work 8 hours a day and have no energy when you get home you may want to think of a different breed. Because they are very high energy they need to be constantly entertained. If you leave a Border Collie for 8 hours a day with no stimulus than you have to expect something will be wrecked when you get home. If they feel bored they will find something to chew on for entertainment. Border Collies are extremely loyal dogs. Sometimes the loyalty can develop into separation anxiety. With proper training this can be avoided. It is alwys good to sign up for Agility classes with a border collie. This will have them using their minds and working off some energy. It is not only fun for your dog but it is great fun for you too. Expect your dog to demand to play with you. Border collies can run for hours straight, it was what they were bred to do, so make sure you have the energy. I have two Border Collies and I breed Border Collies. They are great companions. Males can tend to be more demanding than females and females can be a bit timid at times. Make sure you look into the sex of the dog you are looking to buy.
Good Luck
It will be very rewarding if your ready for it.

The suggestions are very good. The only thing I'd like to add is that border collies are very intelligent and active. If they are too bored, or left alone too often, they will not handle it well. Some turn destructive on their environment, some on themselves.
They are not hunting dogs, they are herding dogs. Your dog might sometimes try and herd things like children and birds. It's pretty funny, actually.

they are HERDING dogs - NOT hunting dogs
they love long walks but prefer short runs mixed with "games" like catch etc...
they are VERY intelligent (this is whats bad - because if you dont keep them mentally stimulated they will find something to do .. and will be destructive)
they excell at obedience and do well at agility
DO NOT GET A BORDER COLLIE unless you have ALOT of time to spend one one with the dog... seriously Border COllies are one of the most commonly abandoned breeds because owners are not prepared for the intensity of them
housebreak like any dog - be warned because they are smart - they are more likely to be submissive pee'ers

Border Collies aren't hunting dogs, but rather herding dogs.
As for their requirements, they need a lot of exercise. Lots of walks/runs (at least twice a day), and if no one in the household is experienced with training dogs, an obedience course is an absolute must. BCs are great animals, but they will outsmart you if you're not on your toes.

They are the best dog in the world. Very intelligent, great with kids, animals, they love to herd. I have had the pleasure of being with my border collie for 13 years. I always get compliments on how smart she is, sometimes more then me! You will be so happy, they are very easy to train also. Mine never dug holes, killed anything, no bad habits, she did eat a bag of chocolates when she was younger.

to house break it- first, check on websites on-line for a couple training tips.
next, after about 1-2 Hours after feeding the puppy, he might have to go out, take your pooper-scooper and a baggie, or paper towels while you go for a walk for it. it might do it's business. if it has accidents, don' scold it too much- just take it outdoors to see if has to do more.
About the dog- the border collie is a kind, cute dog. the dog has a pretty good temperament, and is mostly good around kids. this dog is very active!
