They believed that the curse of Ham and/or Mark of Cain refered to black people.
After some internal pressure, the church announced a revelation officially renouncing its policy of excluding blacks from the priesthood.

It was 1978, they don't hate black people, there really isn't a clear-cut answer on why, though there are theories, and the priesthood is the authority to act in God's name. To a later post: If mormons are racist and biased against anyone who isn't whitem, then why are there so many Black, Brown, and other colored people in the church?

The Morman religion is a very conservative form of christianity. Just like if took America many many years to eliminate racism; it also took time to eliminate it in this religion. As with any conservative religion, things take longer to change. Remember, racism in America still exsisted in some places up into the 1960-70's. And discrimination still exsists all over the world(i.e. against jews or women in the middle east).
Mormans in general are good people who do good things. As with any religion, it is generally the extremists, not the normal people who hold bad/racist/discriminatory beliefs

Mormons do not hate black people, they alow them to join the priesthood and they have many in the church.

The Priesthood is the authority to act in Jesus' name here on earth.

God removed his curse from the "good" Lamanites (the ones that "united with the Nephites"), and they "became exceedingly fair, with skins "white like unto the Nephites."
