I have used it since 1985. FDA does not allow us to say that it is sweeet but does let us make medical claims about it, like helps blood sugar regulation. This site has more info on it and clue to why FDA does this.

It is a great sweetener,I've been using it now for over a year and you need a very small amount so a bottle of it lasts forever.
It is very good for dieting especially if you're on a low glycemic diet like South Beach. Good luck!!!!
PS You'll have no bitterness if you make sure you product is 100 percent stevia without fillers.I know from experience.

It is, it's an herb. However, I found a better sweetener, it's called NATURALLY SWEET:

Made from sugar, so it tastes like sugar
Has no calories
Is suitable for people with diabetes
Can be used in any food or beverage
Stays sweet during cooking and baking
Looks, feels, and tastes exactly like sugar
Leaves no unpleasant aftertaste, unlike artificial sweeteners
Reduces sugar and carbohydrate cravings
Is tooth friendly
Has a low glycemic index

Yes, it's ok, I have both varieties, the green one which is made from the leaves and the white one which comes from the root. The white one is VERY potent. There is an aftertaste in both of them, though less so with the white one. Kinda like a grass thing ... you'll get used to it, it doesn't taste as bad as CANCERIGENIC Aspartame.

Ive tried it and I absolutely detest it! it can be used just like sugar and is, I suppose, great for dieting. Ive tried several brands, both powder and liquid and its all nasty tasting to me. A great and delicious sweetener that has a low glycemic index is agave syrup or nectar which is made from cactus. it is available from health food stores and on line and is the only sweetener I now use.

I use it. It is far stronger than sugar(300Xs sweeter) and takes very small amounts to sweeten coffee.
You can buy it at your local health food store.

I've tried it, but it is not very sweet (you can't make a straight exchange teaspoon for teaspoon), and it has a slight but curious aftertaste. I prefer Equal or Splenda, but that's just me.

I've tried it. It's VERY bitter. I've got a box of it in my pantry. I think it might be good for cooking, but for sweetener in tea or on cereal or whatever, it's really bitter.
