I have an Onkyo receiver that is great, except that the selection between A and B speakers cant be controlled with the remote (you can only do it on the unit directly). This is a problem because I am working with two rooms (with a set of speakers and a passive monitor in each one) using a set of remote signal senders.
I particularly like Onkyo, Pioneer and Yamaha, and don't want to spend a fortune, so prices, if you know them would be helpful.

I am looking for a solution, so please only answer if you can do so coherently and accurately.

The Yamaha HTR-5790 will do what you need.
I have it's older brother , the HTR-5760 and it is
a terrific unit. The HTR-5790 is selling now for
about $600. 7.1, 110 wph, THX certified, XM,
A/B, etc. Try Fry's for best price.

This was a hard one without personally using each receiver. You also didn't mention a price range, what's a fortune? Some think $1k is expensive for a receiver and some think anything under $10k is crap.

So on the cheap side.
Denon DRA-685 at about $500 Dual Room/Dual Source
Not exactly a/b but they should have independent volume controls.
"Dedicated multi-room outputs, with volume level adjustment via remote control. Room-to-Room Remote Control with Remote In/Out Terminals: External remote control equipment, including IR re-transmitters and IR remote receivers, such as Denon's separately available RC-616, RC-617S, RC-617W, and RC-618 IR devices, can be connected to the DRA-685's IR remote input and output terminals. By connecting such equipment and using the supplied sub room remote control, you can switch the sub room output on and off, select the sub room source, adjust the volume, and recall preset radio stations from the sub room. "

Many AV receivers in the $700 plus range allow you to use a multi room function as above. Still not A/B speaker switching.
