Caffeine is a central nervous system and metabolic stimulant, and is used both recreationally and medically to reduce physical fatigue and restore mental alertness when unusual weakness or drowsiness occurs. Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system first at the higher levels, resulting in increased alertness and wakefulness, faster and clearer flow of thought, increased focus, and better general body coordination [11]. The precise amount of caffeine necessary to produce effects varies from person to person depending on body size and degree of tolerance to caffeine. Consumption of caffeine does not eliminate the need for sleep: it only temporarily reduces the sensation of being tired.

Caffeine is sometimes administered in combination with medicines to increase their effectiveness, such as with ergotamine in the treatment of migraine and cluster headaches, or with certain pain relievers such as aspirin or acetaminophen. Caffeine may also be used to overcome the drowsiness caused by antihistamines. Breathing problems (apnea) in premature infants are sometimes treated with citrated caffeine, which is available only by prescription in many countries. [12]

While relatively safe for humans, caffeine is considerably more toxic to some other animals such as dogs, horses and parrots due to a much poorer ability to metabolize this compound. Caffeine has a much more significant effect on spiders, for example, than most other drugs do. [13]

Caffeine promotes good liver function.
New Orleans, Louisiana – Two studies unveiled Monday as part of Digestive Disease Week 2004 revealed that soda drinkers are at increased risk of developing esophageal cancer, while those who drink coffee and caffeinated beverages may in fact be at lower risk for developing liver problems such as liver injury due to hepatitis B or C, alcoholism, obesity, or impaired glucose metabolism.

One of the studies, conducted by Dr. Constance E. Ruhl and Dr. James E. Everhart at Social and Scientific Systems, examined the effects of caffeine on liver function. The researchers found that liver injury was less prevalent in coffee drinkers, and that at-risk study participants who drank two cups of coffee a day were less likely to have elevated levels of ALT, a chemical released by the liver when it is in distress.
