Poor Study Habits usually means "Procrastination."
Mainly, I believe, the causes for procrastination is lack of training by the elementary teachers to teach the younger and more influential students that they must do what they are responsible to do as soon as possible.
Instead, they are taught certain skills (such as math, science, arts) and not properly taught how they must do the work required. Instead the go off to play lego or house in their spare time.
Generally, in my opinion, it is just lack of proper training at a young age.

Heeheehee!
Look at ll these answers blaming outside distractions.
The reason for poor study habits is lack of self-discipline.
A student who disciplines himself removes himself from distractions, turns off the TV, does not get on the phone, and studies.
The End.

I believe poor study habits start when you are young. If a teacher or parent doesn't instill them in you at an early age, you most likely won't get them. Plus, with a lack of enthusiasim or understanding of how important school is, you probably won't do as well because you won't strive to do your best.

Lots of things can be the causes: lack on interest in the subject; distraction from outside interests/hobbies; no commitment to finishing the class or school; plain laziness; overconfidence in one's ability to cram for the test and pass; learning disabilities. Hope this helps.

Personally, I studied a lot better at the school library than at home where the TV, other people, laundry, etc., were there as distractions.

lack of concentration, disorders like ADD and OCD, overloaded censory cells (when too much is going on around & in your study environment) i.e. studying in your family room while the dog is barking at your big sister and your mom is on the phone 3-way with a sister in michigan and one in california, and your dad is watching tv on the couch behind you. lol...hope that helps (i mean that's why i can't study anyway)

Lack of structured study time.
Too many other things fighting for attention (tv, video games, computer)
Lack of motivation to just do it.
