Yes, a lot of people survive it. I've met several people who are in remission from brain cancer, mostly children, since my son has cancer too we have been in the hospital all summer and that's all you see is kids with cancer.
You don't see those who have passed on unfortunately, but many have had to endure years of both chemo and radiation, often having to spend a good 6 months or more in hospital because it makes them so sick, and others, like one young teenager we met, was on an 8 week protocol like my son, and is finished now, and his tumour is gone.
So basically it depends on the type of cancer, and where the tumour is located. Usually the fatal ones or hard to beat back ones are on the optic nerves or brain stem.
Hope your friend responds well. Tell him to have hope. It will be awful, especially the nausea after the chemo, but tell him to look for the light at the end of tunnel and he'll be just fine.

It depends on age, general health, and the stage at which it was diagnosed. The below link will give you all kinds of information.
If caught early, most cancers can now be successfully arrested if not "cured" altogether.
