Well, judging by the answers here, I'd say that if they are, that's where I want to go. I might learn something from these intellgent and perceptive men. It's total insanity to say that because a person didn't accept Jesus as a savior, they go to hell EVEN IF they lived thousands of years before Jesus was born.

bobkgin,
"So am I to believe that Buddha, Confucious, Lao Tzu, Gandhi, Socrates, Plato et al are in Hell?"
I think so.
"They're all supposed to be 'evil dudes'?"
( They never listen!) You don't go to Hell because you are evil. You go to Hell for not accepting Jesus. I know that sounds like a cliche, but that's why.

Well, Plato at least. Some people have theorized that Plato only used Socrates as a hypothetical person, as his teachings were entirely communicated through plato.
And we all know Confucious went to hell, he's a commie! Wait, no he isn't. That makes no sense. Well, Confucious screwed things up for Women in Japan (Japan imported many confucion ideas, though Confucious was obviously not from Japan)
wait, I'm rambling.

(Acts 24:15) 15 and I have hope toward God, which hope these [men] themselves also entertain, that there is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous.
not in hell, and gandhi, said if we were all to carry out the teachings
of jesus all the worlds problems would be solved. not a quote parafrased.
Confucious was simply a man tryin to create a better government
people started vinerating him,200 years after his death.
bobk, the scripture above shows that all those that died before
jesus will be resurected. and judged according to their heart condition.in fact hell is a philosophy of man.look at this and think what it means;(Jeremiah 7:31) 31 And they have built the high places of To´pheth, which is in the valley of the son of Hin´nom, in order to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, a thing that I had not commanded and that had not come up into my heart.’
so man has made it seem god is vicious, you see how he feels toward burning people.

...and who is it that deemed them evil? I don't remember hearing that they were evil. Lao Tzu abhorred evil; Buddha reached out to the lowest of castes and those of all religions; Confucius emphasized morality; Gandhi, too, helped the poorest in the caste system; Plato was a believer in ethics; Socrates was a believer in virtue instead of material wealth. Not too sure that any of these men were EVIL - just dedicated to their belief systems.

I could be wrong but does not the BIBLE say in short that the dead will remain asleep until GODS SECOND COMING. Then the judgement book will be brought out to see who goes to heaven.
Besides no matter what you've done did not the guy who died by him on the cross ADMIT his sins and JESUS gave him a home in heaven.
So I say noone is in HELL yet just waiting for the 2nd coming

Through the atonement of Jesus Christ, all men may be saved by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel. It is part of the mercy and justice of Heaveny Father that those who did not have the opportunity in this life, will later.
Peter wrote that between his death and resurrection Jesus taught the spirits in prison. So most of these people have had the chance to accept the Gospel.

I think the only one on your list, the great Et Al, is not in hell. All the rest are screaming as their weenies get torched while lucifer's demons slowly turn their staked bodies on a spit. I actually read in the God Times (only those of us who have a paid subscription to The Almighty Alrighty get it) that Jesus pissed God off and HE is in hell, too. Weird stuff. Especially given that the World Trade Center bombers are hanging out with 72 virgins supplied by the Almighty.

We are not judged by our good works, we are sepperated from God by sin... whether it be 1 or 1000. These men are no better or worse than me or anyone else. We do not believe them to be "evil" nor do WE want them or other people to go to Hell. People act as though Christians wrote the Bible, we didn't OR, that if people stopped believing in God or the Bible, they would go away... they wont.
Niether I nor any Christian will be handing down eternal sentences to anyone. And questions like this can be posted 100 times a day (and they are) but they wont change God's mind. He is God, we are not.

I'm wondering if God would find it more enjoyable to hang out with Gandhi, Buddha, Confucius, Lao Tzu, Socrates, and others of their kind OR would he rather hang out with Jim Jones, Pat Robertson and Jerry Fallwell?
God save me from sniveling, whining, haughty, condescending, arrogant, smug, self-righteous Christians and please send me to that place where you send Gandhi, Buddha, Lao Tsu, Socrates and kindred others.
For me, it would be hell to have to hang out with Christians for eternity; their heads just can't be in the right place when their fingers are always in your pockets.
