There are a ton of small/toy breeds....miniature dachshunds, miniature schnauzers, chiahuahua (probably spelled that incorrectly), 13 inch & under beagles, miniature poodles, etc. Miniature dachhunds have several types of coats. For instance, there is short hair, long hair, wired-hair which basically is a long hair but it's wavey/wirey. Since you don't want a dog that sheds stay away from long haired or wired hair. Go with the short, smooth hair dogs.

But find books at the pet store, library, online, etc. that show toy breeds and bone up on the different breeds. It also depends on where you live, if there will be small children in your household, will the dog be mainly an indoor or outdoor dog, etc.

There are tons to choose from but you really need to read about the different breeds to decide what is best for you, your environment and househould.

I currently own a miniature wired-hair dachshund & miniature pinscher. Min Pins can be very hyper and they can jump like crazy (mine has cleared a 3-1/2 foot fence with plenty of room left between her belly & the fence). My Min Pin sheds a little, my mini-dachshund sheds more. A friend of mine as a 13 inch & under Beagle, though he stands at 13 inches. He sheds a lot, even though he is short haired. And once a beagle gets a scent in their nose they are like children....selective hearing!

Good luck!

The best breed to have is the one that fits your personality and lifestyle. The worst thing you could do is get an active dog, when you have a more sedintary lifestyle, or to get a lap dog that you intend on keeping outdoors. I would see what the different breeds offer in terms of the kind of life I lead. They say you can't teach a pig to sing--you just waste your time and annoy the pig. So get a dog that has the temperment you desire firstmost.

Now, I like active dogs, and if you do too, I could suggest no better dog than the Brittany. But Brittanies need room to run and plenty of time to do it too. Good luck with your choice!

West Highland White Terriers aren't more than 25 pounds. They have short hair and since they have hair they don't shed nearly as much as like a golden retriever. They just shed as much as a human would. I have one and they are very loving and are adorable.

The best dog to have is a yellow labrador. They were rated as "best temperment doggy!" LOL! No, seriously, they have the best temperment, and they are very friendly. They don't shed very much either. Only need to vacuum carpets every 3 weeks!

Yorkie, Maltese, Poodle, Shih Tzu. Lasa Apso... All dont shed they have hair not fur. All stay small. You will need to take them to the groomer about every 2 to 3 months.

A Schottish Terrier or maybe even a mini Schnauzer, those are great dogs!

Golden Retriever by far! Great family dogs, loves exercise, aren't picky eaters, love kids, very loyal. I had to put mine to sleep after 15 years.

If you got room around your house, a golden retriever is the best. They are really smart and friendly and a great family addition, as they are great with kids.
