Traditionally this means the first night of the marriage when you have your first experience of making love together, however these days I don't think there are many virgin brides. ( or grooms ! )

Today it merely means the first night that a couple spends the night together making love or as some say having sex. Used to be it was the first night after being married but now it is just the first night even if unmarried.
