My uncle has a nice vacation home in a popular resort area. He lets me use it whenever I want to, I just have to ask. Well during a conversation, I told a friend of mine about previous trips I've taken up there and she then says "Hey, let's go up there for the weekend. Call your uncle and ask him."

Without thinking I said "Ok" but as soon as I said it, I regretted it. She's somewhat of a friend, so I don't want to spend a whole weekend with her. And my uncle prefers that friends of family go up WITH family.

How can I call this off and let her know that she overstepped when she invited herself?

I think some misunderstood a few points.

My uncle does not mind friends using the house, but prefers that a family member also be there.

My friend did not say which weekend to go - she knows we need to schedule it with my uncle.

And lastly, I need to say something that closes the door on this discussion for the future also.

Thank you everyone for your wonderful responses!

Just say that your uncle did not approve.

Just say that you shouldn't have assumed that your uncle's house was available, and that he has other plans. If your friend persists, just say that the place is usually booked with his own family members and that even you can't just show up unannounced.

And next time -- be careful !! Don't let yourself get involved in a situation where you have to wriggle your way out of it.

And you say that she is "somewhat" of a friend. Don't go anywhere with her for a weekend until you get to know her better and build some trust. Would you really want to take her to the house and risk her breaking something, or stealing something -- and then YOU would be the one to answer to your uncle !!

Just tell her that now that you've thought about it you don't think it's appropriate for you to ask your uncle. Tell her about his wishes that it be only family. If she's a decent person she'll understand. If she doesn't understand you don't want to be friends with her anyway.

Tell your uncle that you're going to ask him if you can use the vacation home but that you want him to say "no."

Then ask him, and he'll say "no."

Then tell your friend that you asked and he said "no" (and you won't be lying.)
