I once took my father's 380 automatic pistol and was caught with it by the La Habra Police Department, back in 1994. Ever since then, my father used to go to the shooring range alot. 12 years today, I'd like to buy him a Hunters rifle with a long range scope to make up for past disappointment and present it as a Christmas gift this year. However, I never purchased a firearm and would like to know on how to go about purchasing his present. I understand that there is a 10 day waiting period to determine criminal backround screen. I'm 30 years old and asking on what should I do or how should I do this? HELP.....? or email me and we'll discuss it personally...

You will need to decide what caliber of rifle you are planning on getting him. That will be determined by what he is planning on hunting. For varmints .223 would be a good caliber (easy to find, and relatively cheap), but would not be good for deer. 30-30, 30-06, or .308 are common for deer.

Next is what action you want to give him, bolt, level, pump or semi-auto are the most common. A military surplus bolt action rifle would be the least expensive (you can get decent ones for around $100); the semi-auto's tend to be more expensive. So a lot will depend on that caliber they are made in and how much you want to spend.

I can't help much with the scope selection; I do not use them much, or collect them, so I am not knowable about them. A rule of thumb is that good optics will cost as much or more than the rifle.

The federal waiting period no longer exists; it has been replaced with the "National Instant Criminal Background Check System" or NICS. (Your state may require a waiting period, or have additional regulations, I am only addressing the federal regulations) when you go and buy the gun you will have to fill out a form (4473) that is slightly longer than a page. On the form there are a bunch of questions, the first one is the one that may confuse you a bit, it has me for years, till read the other pages of the form. It is "are you the actual buyer of the firearm(s) listed on the form?" you are the actual buyer. On the top of page three it has the definitions of who is the buyer, and it states that you are "if you are acquiring the firearm as a legitimate gift, for a third party"

After you have done all this the optics will have to be mounted on the rifle. Depending on what type and weather there are any holes to be drilled and taped, you might want to get a gunsmith to do it. Most gun stores have a gunsmith so that should be no problem.

Go to a sporting goods store. They know all the steps to take. It is too hard to say what your record will do. All you can do is try. Good luck.

I don't know anything about buying guns but I hope your father appreciates you because it is August and you are planning WAY ahead for his C'mas. That's sweet.
