It depends...
Do you have a HDTV? If so, a very high-quality DVD player with up-converting would serve you well. I'm not one for spending a ton of cash on optical disk players. They seem to have a shorter service life than other electronics no matter how much you spend. New formats are out, capable of true HDTV resolution. Wouldn't go that route yet... untill 1 format wins and the prices come down... Wouldn't drop a small fortune on a standard DVD player right now either...
The OPPO OPDV971H Digital HD-Ready Up-Converting DVD Player is VERY competitively priced. Technology is up to date, does up-converting and has all of the necessary connectors for the best picture on HDTVs, picture quality is excellent and many extra features included. Will even play DivX or XviD burned to disks on your computer. Go to Amazon.com and search for this player. You'll see that it's VERY popular among home theater enthusiasts and most are very pleased with their purchase. Tried to post a link for you, but it was too long and won't display correctly here:( If you order this player directly from OPPO as opposed to ordering from Amazon, you will be assured of it being shipped with the latest firmware, newest remote (better), and a free HDMI to DVI adapter cable you may need.
The Panasonic DVD-S97S is another very popular choice among home theater enthusiasts. Has video quality to rival the most expensive players available and everything you need for the best picture on a HDTV (HDMI / DVI connectors, cutting-edge up-conversion), without being pricey.
The Sony DVPNS90V is another strong performer. I believe the up-conversion in this player isn't as cutting-edge as in the other 2 players. Has the HDMI / DVI connectors. It won't play the DivX or XviD compressed video files like the OPPO will. It WILL play the new SACD format (audio CDs with better resolution). So... if that sounds like something you'd want to try out... here it is. The picture quality is reported to be very good, and I've heard that the SACD format does indeed sound fantastic. A real improvement over standard CDs (although I haven't heard a SACD yet). My DVD player is a Sony and I've been very pleased with it's performance over some other makes I've owned. If you are interested in the SACD feature, or otherwise using the player heavily for playing music CDs... It might be wise to look into the similar 5-disk player from Sony. Nice to have a multi-disk player for listening to a variety of uninterrupted music sometimes.
If you don't have HDTV, pretty much any value-priced name-brand player would be fine these days. I tend to lean towards Sony or Panasonic... Check consumer reviews of different players before you buy to spot any particularly troublesome models. Seems like every manufacturer has "lemon" models occasionally. Amazon.com and Circuit City's online site both have user reviews posted for all their products.
Happy hunting!!!
