It is frustrating, and i too have wanted to get back at the telemarketers, but in the long run tactics like this won't work. As long as the telemarketers know that they have a live number (a number that is in use and belongs to an occupant), they will keep calling.
The first thing you need to do is to go to the FTC's website and make sure your number is in their database (if not, it will take a few weeks for it to take effect, and if it is, it's possible that the DNC request has expired- make sure you keep current on that). Next, for any company who does call you, simply tell them that you wish to be put on their DNC list and make a note of this (the date/time, phone number, etc). Should this company contact you again, you can contact the FTC and turn them in for violating your request.
Some organizations can technically get around the rules of the DNC (companies that you already do business with, charities, survey takers, etc), but as soon as you tell them that you no longer wish to be contacted, they are obligated to stop calling.
hope this helps!

Someone called me and I just told them I was busy and too busy to take their survey. I was organizing my closet. I hung up. They said they were not selling anything. I am on do not call and have the solicitor block and they still rang through. I just told them I was busy and hung up. Yeah do whatever you want. Or do this. Apologize profusely for a really long time about how you know that this is how they make their money, but you really do not want their product. Tell them how sorry you are. If it is a male have your woman come on and do it. If it is a woman you do it. Tell her how sorry you are and tell her how you have kids to feed and all your problems that do not exist. Go on and on and on. Then keep apologizing about how sorry you are. I did this and they were apologizing to me after wards. Go ahead and try the rude way and the apologetic way. Ask them for their number to call them back. Put the cordless in the refrigerator and leave it on. Do whatever. Just have fun. Pneumatic horn sounds great. Then return the horn and get your money back.

When some get thru the Do Not Call, I act interested ask about their product , then tell them I'm reporting them to the FCC. Sometimes I ask them if the mind if I put them on hold, then I left for about 5 minutes, came back, let them talk a bit, apologize, tell them I'm very interested, but could they hold for a few minutes? I leave for about 10 minutes, usually they are still there.when I come back Then I tell them goodnight, honey and hang up.
Course it helps that I have a very soft sweet voice (when I choose!)

Probably some of them represent companies (bank, utilities, phone company) which you have done business with in the past. The law allows these companies to contact you, because you're their customer! Another legitimate group will be charities and political organizations. Somebody has mentioned surveys.
Have a pity, don't injure these poor call people - how would they know that you're on the "do-not-call list". Fist time ask to put you on THEIR don-not-call list. Second time ask talking to the manager and tell you'll sue them (you have the right to do that after the first request).
All I have described applies to the U.S. I don't know how it works in other countries.

Some telemarketing companies have wove around the Do Not Call list and pose as survey takers. I agree with you; it is VERY annoying.
Best thing to do is hang up while they are giving their sales pitch or tell them not to call your number again.

They still call, because SOMEWHERE you have signed away the do not call caveat. Was in the fine print of something you signed up for, or a sweepstakes or something like that.
Or, they are just lying sacks of $hit and are illegal!

I think you would be justified. But if the places calling you are credit card companies, they can sneak through the do not call list because they are classified as banks.

i guessed you can view this from another perspective. the telemarketers are doing their job too and it's hard earning big bucks now. just politely tell them no and warn them if they call again you'll lodge a complaint.
