I understand your plight. My wife thinks golf is stupid, so I had to "go low" initially. Here's your location - Walmart, Meijer, Target, K's Merchandise, Farm & Fleet. I got a lob wedge at Walmart to ten bucks. If you are just starting out, you can even get 460cc drivers there for 40-60 bucks. I got my stepson one and it's not bad. I haven't really notices irons there, but putters, wedges and woods you can get there. They also had a decent selection of training aids at good prices. I'd recommend a putting aid first, a cheap one without a ball return mechanism.
Here's the problem, if you try to peice together a set, when it comes to the irons, you may end up paying more than you expected. I got my first set at Target for ninety bucks - Driver, two fairway woods, three through nine irons, pitch wedge and putter, all with a bag. If your patient, wait for a deal like that. I know ALDI even had a similar start set for I think $60, but without a bag. My Dad got a good deal i believe from K's Merchandise for about a hundred. In his they took out the 5 wood and put in a Hybrid. Speaking of that, I forgot about MC Sports. I got my hybrid there on sale for about $30, regular price $100. They run really good specials on individual clubs, and other golf equipment. Hope this helps. Have fun, and "Be the Club".

Try garage sales, you can generally get them there very cheap. Also, flea markets and Ebay. Problem with Ebay is unless they are close to you, there is no way to see them or how the fit for you. At one time the Salvation Army used to have some. Good luck!
