The size has nothing to do with it. It depends how much exercise the dog needs and how much you are willing to give it. The home is where the dog goes to rest. If you are planning to go running a few hours every day, get a sporty breed like a terrier. Some breeds need less exercise, like a bulldog. If you plan on spending less time than that with the dog, don't get one.

If the dog will need to climb stairs, watch out that the breed isn't prone to joint problems.

I wouldn't want to put a dog in an apartment unless I was going to be there a lot. If he's there alone, he's going to get depressed and maybe bark during the times you're gone too.

If anything you need a small well-behaved dog that doesn't require a lot of running around outside. Maybe a Yorkie or Maltese...although the Maltese can be barky and loud. Check out the Shih tzu.......

Why not get an AKC book and look at the dogs by appearance and temperment. They become a family member so you need to get one that you're going to enjoy having for a long time.

We have a Shih Tzu in a house. They are wonderful little dogs. No shedding. You do have to brush them every couple or 3 days unless you keep them cut. I'm lazy so she gets cut every couple of months except for her ears and tail. I have 5 minutes to brush that. They learn real quick. Cant take the heat which is great cause neither can I. Doesn't need much exercise. 15 minutes before work. She uses a pee pad when I'm gone. I'll never own any other kind after this experience. Mine weighs 9 pounds at 5 yrs old. You can get bigger ones up to 18 pounds. m

I live in an apartment and have 3 dogs - A labX, and 2 Shih-tzus. The labX does good in the apt. but sheds like crazy, the Shih-tzus don't shed, they aren't yappy (like other toy dogs can be) and they don't require tons of exercise (they like to play and run around the apt like an indoor cat does........hehehe) They do however require lots of grooming if kept long or else at least 3 or 4 trips to the groomer a year if kept short.

A great dog for you would be a Maltese or a Yorkie. They are usually small and lap dogs. Don't get a sporting or work breed because they need a lot of exercise are very big and you will eventually regret it. I would stick to the two breeds mentioned.

Great Dane. Even though it's a big dog, their best for apartment living. Their breed likes the small confined space of apartments.

In an apartment it would be hard for a large dog a small might work but you really can not leave them for a long period of time.
