UPDATE: Hitler was Christian! Castro has never started a war. Lenin did not start HIS country's civil war. Thanks to all the good answerers here. Maybe if we atheists invented an imaginary friend we could get some of our points across to the christians! Or why do I even bother?

Most wars in history have been started over religion.
Take away religion, and you take away a reason to start a war.

That is such a good question. Though I believe too that good people, following whatever religion they believe in, don't start wars. People who use religion for their own motives are the culprits – i.e. for power and material wealth. Each religion needs to come to a compromise about saying that their God is the only true one, and agree it is the same spirit they are all trying to worship.

I do believe wars are started for religion, and I love and respect several atheist individuals, but religion certainly isn't the only thing that starts war, and the lust for power can take many forms.

too many wars are started by defending a belief system. if there is nothing to defend, there is nothing to fight about. you can be spiritual without being religious and have beliefs and morals without following a religion also. religion gets people too fired up and telling each other that they are evil and going to hell and things like that. its not worth it. also it is very contradictory because most religions say that its people should love everyone when all they really do these days is hate and put everyone else down for having different beliefs.

There are litteraly hundreds of examples atheists start wars. Napoleon, Hitler, all wars USSR leaders started over all these years of comunistic regeme.......this is only a little number of names but thruogh all the history there are hundreds....i am a bulgarian and i can tell you of many bulgarian kings who did not believe any god and started war....

Atheists tend to be on the rational side, and since war is an irrational act, they see no point in engaging in the stupidity of fighting.
Also, since wars are typically fought in the name of god (either openly or privately), and atheists don't believe in the existence of god, there is no point in engaging in war.

Because no system wants to put us in charge. We'd be fair to all, and the existing powers don't want that to happen.
For those that bring up Communist leaders, they weren't atheists. They just didn't want existing organized religions. However, they did propose a religious icon to follow. It was the Soviet State. That was their God.
Don't lump us free thinkers with them!

Because their thoughts aren't clouded by religious fairy tales of heaven and the glory of a God that doesn't exist to them.I am agnostic and we never start wars either.
The country's you named above have religions far older than Christianity,you are misinformed they are not atheists ie Korea Iran,etc

because an atheist doesn't believe enough in something to kill another person.
because an atheist believes in the sanctity of life; not just paying lip service to "unborn" life or just the life of those who agree to the same religious beliefs.
because atheists are reasonable people who could never generalize away the value of another person's life.
