It's been 8 weeks and the hole is still very deep. I am still getting loads of food debris in it and I am forced to pick it out with those floss pickers because it won't come out with a water syringe (that's how packed the food gets). Should I let the food pile up and risk getting another infection or continue trying to get the food out? The only thing I am worried about is that the whole won't close up if I continue to do this.

I hope you are using salt water. It might have helped if the dentist had put stitches there because it should have long healed. Don't let the food build up in there though as it COULD cause infection and worse trouble than you can imagine. Did you tell your dentist? What did he say? I would threaten to sue him for doing a botched job. I wouldn't use the floss pickers as you could stab yourself and open up a soft spot and cause infection. Good luck.

Extraction sites heal from the bottom of the socket . The opening that you can see won't close up and seal off until the inside of the site has all filled in with healthy tissue. After 8 weeks the hole shouldn't be "very deep". Let your dentist look and advise.

This is something you should be asking the person who removed your wisdom tooth, not us.

When I got my wisdom teeth removed, I was told to "flush" my mouth out with water after eating. This was enough to remove any food from the hole. I can't imagine what you're eating, or the manner in which you're eating it, that you would get food "packed" into the hole such that it won't simply rinse out. You really need to talk to a professional. You run the risk of infection.

Rinse with warm salt water right after you eat. Rinse with warm salt water in between meals, and rinse with salt water before bed too. Of course....continue to brush and floss as often as you normally would, but the salt water rinses are really good for keeping the mouth clean and promoting healing.

If you have any pain, swelling, unusual redness, or any other symptom of infection.....consult your dentist.

Good Luck!

3-4 wks you should really not notice it too much anymore. It will take longer for it to totally close up. Keep it clean. Go back to the doctor who removed it to verify you are healing in the area.
