I am entering my freshman year of college this fall....and I need a job for next summer. I live in Boston, and I heard that many college students go up to Alaska for the summer to work as deckhands or in some other capacity in the fishing industry. The money is great so I hear. How can I go about applying and consequently obtaining a job as an Alaskan deckhand or a similar job. I would love to go up to Alaska and work in that beautiful state. Anyone and everyone please chime in.

Truthfully, the work is dangerous and you get paid by poundage of fish (most places). It hardly sounds worth it. The tourism industry is HUGE here, and there are many other places to work for some college $, everything from driving a bus, holding a cruise sign @ the airport, to vaccuuming motor homes. Because the cost of living is high here, most salararies seem good. Many people come up here for summer jobs, but beware many never leave....

It is going to be hard to get a job in the Alaskan fishing industry without being there and meeting the right person to hire you to work on their boat. You are right the work is hard and most of all dangerous. Good Luck
