Because they were once teenagers themselves, so might have some advice to offer by experience?

Because they might think you're not doing a very good job? It's annoying when people 'Butt in' but sometimes they do it because they're getting abuse or grief from kids and feel frustrated that the parents don't seem to be doing anything (I'm not saying that's true in your case, it's just one possible explanation).

BTW I don't think you have to have kids to have a valid opinion on their welfare/upbringing. We all have experience of dealing with siblings, other peoples children who we take care of - and of being children ourselves!

Kind of irritating, isn't it? I mean, you have the kids, go through all the grief getting them to the teenage yrs and then someone who hasn't ever raised a child tells you what you need to do.
It is possible however, that even you would agree with the old saying, "Once removed twice the clarity". You know, I am on the outside looking in the window, kind of thing.
Just because we are parents, and they are not doesn't mean that we, or them have all the answers, just a different perspective. Sometimes it benefits all of us to listen to those who "havent done that", for they often can bring a new and fresh idea to the table on the same old problem. I for one find it refreshing should I just give it a chance to learn a better way of doing the same thing. Lets' face it, a teenager today is not that much different in their overall thinking than they were in your or my day. The issues have changed, but teenaged brains are still dysfunctional. :)
Being stubborn, or closed minded does nothing to solve the problem you may be facing and it sure doesn't help the teenager if your solution is the only one that exists. Isn't that the goal, help the kid? It really shouldn't matter where it comes from, so long as it works.
Just because we may be the parents, may be the most rational reason we SHOULD seek out other ideas and solutions, we are just plain too involved in the problem and/or situation.
