I had the lap-band procedure on July 26th 2006. The procedure took about 35 minuets. Since the surgery I have lost about 25 pounds. Before surgery you have to go to a heart doctor and get a check-up and an EKG done. Then you have to go to a gastrologist and get and endoscopy procedure done to make sure you have no stomach problems. Then they make you go see a shrink to make sure that you really want the procedure. After all that you have to go to 2 support group meetings and talk with patients who have had the lap-band. The meetings are very good because you can get different peoples perspectives on the procedure. Everyone has different stories on what they went through. After that you go to the doctor and discuss your surgery date and any questions you might have. Also before you get surgry you have to lose about 10 to 15 pounds so the surgeon can move the liver to install the lap-band. The weight lose makes the liver more flexible. If you don't lose it , the surgeon will not do the procedure. After surgery in most time you can go right home unless your insurance company makes you stay overnight. Like mine did. Overall the surgery was a snap. I had no complications at all. I started this quest on June 14th and had surgery 43 days later. If you want it bad enough you will work hard to get it. Most people take any where from 6 months to a year to get the procedure. Be prepared to change your whole lifestyle of eating. Good luck to you if you decide to take the plunge. I had the surgery done on June 23,2006. To this day the only effects I have had has been the food getting stuck in my throat, but to my own mistake. You have to eat very slow when you get the lap band put in. You have to really make sure to chew your food well. Sometimes it takes me over 30 minutes to eat a meal. I know 3 other people who have had the surgery and they have experience vomiting, so I guess it depends on the person. You didnt say in your question if you were considering getting the surgery, but if you are, attend all the group meetings you can get to before and after surgery, they are a great help. It worked for me cause I have lost 37 lbs to this day and am feeling great about myself and would not change it for anything in this world right now. For anyone that is considering having it done, go for it. If you are anything like me and have been struggling with your weight for many years, this versus gastric bypass is the way to go. Good luck to you if you are considering it!

Bariatric surgery (weight loss surgery) includes a variety of procedures performed on people who have obesity. Weight loss is achieved by reducing the size of the stomach with a gastric band or through removal of a portion of the stomach (sleeve gastrectomy or biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch) or by resecting and re-routing the small intestine to a small stomach pouch (gastric bypass surgery).

Long-term studies show the procedures cause significant long-term loss of weight, recovery from diabetes, improvement in cardiovascular risk factors, and a reduction in mortality of 23% from 40%.[1] However, a study in Veterans Affairs (VA) patients has found no survival benefit associated with bariatric surgery among older, severely obese people when compared with usual care, at least out to seven years.[2]

The U.S. National Institutes of Health recommends bariatric surgery for obese people with a body mass index (BMI) of at least 40, and for people with BMI 35 and serious coexisting medical conditions such as diabetes.[1] However, research is emerging that suggests bariatric surgery could be appropriate for those with a BMI of 35 to 40 with no comorbidities or a BMI of 30 to 35 with significant comorbidities. The most recent ASMBS guidelines suggest the position statement on consensus for BMI as indication for bariatric surgery. The recent guidelines suggest that any patient with a BMI of more than 30 with comorbidities is a candidate for bariatric surgery

I had lapband in 2006. I lost about 100 lbs then found out I had developed hypothyroidism when I gained back 40 lbs for no reason. I had the lapband removed last week. In 3 months I will have gastric sleeve and a hiatal hernia repair.

Gastric Bypass Surgery /gastrectomy/stomach stapling /lapband (all types of bariatric surgery) is very safe nowadays. It is very cheap in India. There is one company that is very famous in India that arranges obesity surgery for foreigners in India. They are called the Forerunners Healthcare.I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and about their patient stories.

I have also read that they arrange financing for american and canadian patients as obesity surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. The cost savings are incredible. As a doctor i personally believe that your obesity surgery can be easily handled in India as the quality of healthcare available here is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

When boredom, depression, or stress causes cravings, find a nonfood way to meet them such as taking a walk, calling a friend, taking a bath, reading a book, as well as doing some yoga.
