A good bit of people have it right, try to avoid a streetfight.
Let's say you have no choice, or you see some hot girl getting beat by her boyfriend and you feel the need, or are in a inescapable situation where it must come down to a physical confrontation. (Keep in mind this is very RARE).
You want to end this in one piece, and honestly with as little damage or evidence as possible. First off, punching someone in the throat is not a real option, you have to be amazingly accurate and fast to beat their own reflexes. Anyone who tells you they go around smacking guys in the throat have never had to. The human body has a natural reaction to protect vital spots, and at the very least someone BY INSTINCT is ducking their chin protecting their neck, and are going to throw up their arms it is rare you are going to get a clean shot on a guy to the face, much less the neck. With the human body's natural reaction to flinch and throw its hands up when things are flying at your face.
The best move in a streetfight, and many it will say the most controversial, is the rear naked choke, hadaka jime in Judo, Mata Leon in BJJ. If you learn this, how to apply it, when to let go and learn it under an experienced instructor who can teach you the details of this, you can end any situation as bloodlessly as possible, and as quickly as possible. You duck his punch, close in, shove the guy''s shoulder with one arm, pull his opposite shoulder with the other both at the same time with one strong motion, wrap your arm around his neck with the momentum and work to his back. Sink the choke in, wait, then walk away.
If you hold it just until he passes out, it is very safe and very effective. He will be out anywhere from 10 to 30 seconds more or less depending on if anyone is attempting to wake him up. More than enough time to get away, and even at the lesser end when he wakes up it will take him a little bit of time to reorient himself and figure out what just happened, most of the will to fight is out of him at that point as well.
This is not something to go around doing to buddies, or to anyone that bothers you. This is a self defense move, and should only be used in the dojo under strict supervision and as a complete last resort, however it is 100 times more effective than any punch or kick, as it renders someone unconscious without taking damage. Learn this from someone with experience and use extreme caution in doing this move as you are depriving someone's brain of oxygen.
ADD ON hehe...
This is just one of a bunch of different techniques, but if you want to chose one that is the most effective this is a pretty good one. Closing the distance is the hard part, closing without getting hurt that is. Honestly you may even take a punch doing it, but if your hands are up and you are moving, chances are it should be pretty easy to grab onto the guy.
No one technique is an end all, you have to be well versed and even that just increases your chances of success in a hand to hand situation, there are a ton of variables and even the best most experienced fighters still lose or get caught, or worst: stabbed or shot.
Since this question was asked in the realm of a hypothetical techniques I chose to answer it as such. I would hope common sense and the advice of everyone here would tell you to avoid violence at any cost, and to do Martial Arts as a way of growing as a person, not as a fighter.

Hit first. The action is always faster than the reaction. Punch. Quick, hard jab to the nose. It'll water the eyes and set up for harder shots. Also, it's amazing how many people in street fights forget they have two arms to punch with. Use your left and right and throw combos. A Muay Thai clinch with some good knee strikes can end a fight instantly. Also, a well-placed shot or chop to the Brachial Plexus Origin can wreck their balance and end it quickly. BJJ is great, but the only problem is if your pull guard on someone on the street, you're wide open for their buddy to drop bombs on you. Remember, techniques are great, but violence rules the day. Now, all that being said, why do you want to street fight anyway? No one enjoys injury and litigation or prosecution. Probably every fight I've been in, I could have avoided, but I was either too stupid, too angry, or too drunk. Those days are gone, I'm in law enforcement now. The only fights are on duty and we have one cardinal rule. WE DON'T FIGHT FAIR. 5 on 1 are good odds. You want to resist, down you go. You wanna fight, pick between the Taser, ASP, or OC spray. None of them are very pleasant. You wanna use a weapon, well you know what happens then. But now I'm rambling. Bottom line, don't street fight. Even if you kick ***, you bust up your hands and shred your knees on the pavement. Plus you'll probably get arrested and maybe even sued. I know someone who went on a nice vacation on someone else's dime because he got sucker punched. Guy probably thought he was a real bad-*** at the time, but not after he had to shell out several thousand dollars.

Hey bud,
I read the other rable answers. No one wins in a street fight. The best move is to walk away. I am a 5th dan and can hold my own but I have walked away before. The code of bushido is
1 try to talk your way out
2 walk away before confrontation
3 restrain before hitting (hurting)
3 hurt befor maim
4 maim befor kill
5 kill only in life preservation (yours or in protection of another)
Lets say you get in a street fight and you discover some magic move that helps you win. In todays times you better hope you have a better attorney than him. The money wasted hurts more than a bloody nose. The Magic move is to walk away if at all possible. Other than that, MACE.
Hope this helps

Many have tried to tell you that one technique or another is going to serve you best in a "street fight." Others have told you that the best thing to do is just walk away, which I realize is often difficult once the situation has escalated to the level of potential violence. However, the best knowledge that can be applied in a "street fight" is to never allow yourself to be drawn in to such a thing. You have to remember that you have nothing to prove and a great deal to lose if you allow yourself to become embroiled in a fight.
There is only one reason to ever use violence; in defense of yourself or the defenseless. There is no other justification for it; not hurt feelngs, name-calling, or some distorted sense of "honor."
You want to know how to handle a street fight? Take a different route, travel at a different time, and leave the violence in the make-believe world of movies-where it belongs.

Usually you want to walk away from a fight. If you find yourself getting caught up in a fight, usually the best first move would be to try to connect the knockout punch. Basically punch the other person in the face as hard as you can and try to finish the fight as quickly as possible.

Kicking can be dangerous in a real fight. As soon as you lift your foot, all they have to do is step in and push and your on the ground.
It all starts with watching and knowing what the opponent is going to do. If you can get the first strike, that would be best.
A punch to the throat will stop anyone followed by a kick to the groin or knee (this will bring him down).
No one is going to fight you when they are on the gound holding their throat gasping for breath.

None of the above. Run, scream for help, and stay out of the fight. If you seriously think you have time to consider what move to use, you're already beaten, robbed, and probably dead. You kids need to get out from in front of the TV/game system and try some real life for a change.

It is a very sophisticated move......... You have to have a good head whilst doing it though.
Basically if a guy wants to beat you up, you take off your jacket, roll up your sleeves and, having the gift of co-ordination, you put one foot on the floor, then quickly follow it up with the other foot and continue this motion until you have run far enough away not to get hurt!!!
