I just turned 30 and making changes. Getting healthy and loosing weight. I am thinking about getting a personal trainer. Are there any great personal trainers in the Van Nuys area. How much should it cost? Is is worth it to renew my gym membership in 3 months to get training there. Some advise would be great...

I work out in Pasadena at 24 Hour Fitness and I have been working out with personal trainers for 3 years. It is worth the expense if and only if you are willing to put forth the effort yourself. I am always compliant with my trainer, and for most part, I watch what I eat (I caved into some ice cream today, but that's okay).

At 24hr, one session costs about $50. Bally's and LA Fitness should be about the same. Equinox is much more $$$.

When you go to the gym, interview the trainer and ask for their certifications. Ask them how much experience they have. and ask if they have any education or degrees (some trainers study nutrition or kinesiology in college). Ask them what they do for a workout. Personally, I like to work with runners or athletes who play the same sports as me.

When I started in 2003, I was 148lbs. I am now 132lbs and working towards 125. I am *extremely* physically fit now. My endurance has improved dramatically, and I may even take up competitive tennis again (something I used to do in high school). Really, I might be an atypical case, but a best-case scenario if you ask the people who have trained me. If you have half the drive I have, you will meet your goal.
