the Successor of St. Peter and Prince of the all the Apostles, Our Most Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church Benedict XVI, sometimes answer to the somewhat less impressive title, "Primate of Italy"?

Some kind of Darwinist thing, right?

People just type anything, right?

This is a play one words.

A primate (L. prima, first) is any member of the biological order Primates, the group that contains all the species commonly related to the lemurs, monkeys, and apes, with the latter category including humans.

The English singular primate is a back-formation from the Latin name Primates, which itself was the plural of the Latin primas ("one of the first, excellent, noble").

The second definition is the one applied to the Pope. They are not saying he is a monkey. They are saying he is one of the first, excellent, noble.

By the way, I am not Catholic, and I think this is a bunch of bull. He is JUST a MAN. Not God.

Focus on God.

When talking to Italians, the Pope is sometimes referred to as the Primate of Italy, foremost among Italy's bishops.

I guess it has to do with appealing to your audience.

Primate (from the Latin Primus, "first") is a title or rank bestowed on some bishops in certain Christian churches. Depending on the particular tradition, it can denote either jurisdictional authority (title of authority) or ceremonial precedence (title of honor).

Could be. The Catholic Church is famous for its toleration of scientific ideas, such as the sun being at the centre of the solar system, and would never persecute those who dared perpetuate such blasphemous ideas.

Maybe it has a different meaning in italian. I've never seen apes on his skirts, so it's probably not a monkey thing.

Because you don't want to monkey around with God's representative on earth.
