I tried all of the commercial whiteners like Crest Strips without much success. Found out later that the same expensive system I ended up using from the dentist is available for a lot less online via places like eBay. Not cheap, but works incredibly well. Uses a custom tray (the dentist made mine, but I think they also have a means of making them at home), with a gel, which you wear overnight for about a week. Great results. The name is "Nite White".

Brush your teeth daily at least three times a day with regular whitening toothpaste. Also, avoid drinking dark colored sodas like Coke or Pepsi and too much coffee. These all cause stains, according to my dentist. Every six months get a regular dental check-up so your dentist can clean and remove the hard stains on your teeth. Chew non-sugary gum like Dentyne gum to help you produce excess saliva that will actually help you break down the nasties on your mouth that allow tartar to stick to your teeth!

If you want to whiten your teeth without harsh chemicals that "burn" your gums, stick with Crest "Whitening". I have been using it for a while, and people always comment about how white my teeth look. I drink a lot of coffee and smoke. It really works over time, and keeps working while you continue your "bad" habits.

Crest whitening strips are cheap and work really good. After i used them I had the checkout girl at a local grocery store tell me my teeth looked so good and white. Wow, what an endorsement I could make.

It is pretty easy to get one from the dentist. They just make a mold of your teeth and give you plastic trays to put the whitening cream in. Just do that for a while and you teeth will be whiter than your socks.

Rembrandt has a really nice kit out that does a great job, and it's cheaper than Crest White Strips. Like all dental bleaches though, it won't lighten caps.
Good luck!
