Sure God can speak through any person, even you. You have to realize that the more time you spend with God the more time you allow him to influence and direct your life, and when that relationship begins to be very close and disciplined you begin to see how clear he speaks.
For instance, I am not a pastor, missionary or a prophet. In fact I am a Mexican attorney at law. I am only someone who really love God with all my heart and every day and every night I search him in praying and the study of his Word. I have been doing it for years and you should see how many things have been revealed by God. Pages and pages have been written about all these revelations that have been useful for the people I shared them with, and I insist, I am not someone special and unfortunately I do not have the whole day to be in the work of God. I have to go to the office and attend many businesses and even like that God clearly talks. This is because God talks not to special people but to him or her who wishes to listen.
Sometimes what God reveals in connection with one person or situation in particular is so clear in your heart that in can lead you to make some kind of prophecy. This is not unbiblical. On the contrary, in the New Testament you can find many examples of this and even Paul was sad that not all the Christians of the first church prophetized, in other words, it was common to prophetize, why? because people was searching God with all their heart! which is not common nowadays.
IN this case it is possible that you pastor has indeed prophetized something in connection with your father in law, if it comes to be true, then God really spoke him and it is a good indicative that he is having a good level of spirituality. On the contrary, if what he prophetized does not come true then it is clear that God did not speak to him, but I would suggest not being very harsh with him.
We cannot take only this mistake as the only indicative to determine whether or not he is having a good spiritual live that leads him to be a pastor. It what was prophetized does not come true indeed he lacked wisdom, because he should have remained silent if he was not sure about what he prophetized, but I insist that other factors have to be pondered before considering that your church has to be changed. I would say that the main factor to ponder will always be if the church follows what the Bible says and not what a person says above the Bible.
Although I do not know your father in law, God knows him. I will pray for him and whatever happens never forget that God is almighty, God is personal and God loves you and your father in law more than anybody else; hence, whathever may come, if you believe in this love of God you can be sure that was the best thing for your father in law and your family.
Do not be afraid, believe only!!!

1. Your father-in-law will only recover, if his body has the stamina & ability to repair itself. Sadly, we all decline with age. Genetically, some are stronger than others, ( i.e. look at George Burns smoking all those cigars & living to 100), and thus live longer. It's part of life.
2. Just be there for him. Visit and help him with little things as your schedule permits. Enjoy the time you still have with him. Though you may feel helpless to alleviate his suffering, your presence is a loving, meaninful gesture all the same.
3. I do not know if your pastor believes himself, or has just arrogated himself into a position of authority. Osama bin Laden speaks with his god and gets answers, too. Anyone claiming to have a direct pipeline to a god is someone I would get far away from. The pastor has already caused damage because you believed him and reality didn't play out as he prophesied.
4. Have your own personal relationship with your god. You sound reasonable & know right from wrong.
Warm regards.

What God has the ability to do and what He actually does are two different things. Yes God has the ability to speak through a "prophet". However, the new testament tells us that where there were "prophets, they will be done away with." This is referring to our day and time. God does not use prophets like he did in the days of ancient Israel. He uses the Bible to communicate with us today. I suspect that this pastor is what you would call a false prophet. There is some reason that he is telling you this. Maybe he thinks lies will ease your pain, or maybe there is money involved in some way. I don't know. I do know that you should be wary of anyone who claims to speak for God in that way.

I do know that God does frequently give people revelations to be able to help themselves and help others. I also know that sometimes people say that God gave them a revelation when He really didn't. I don't know your pastor, or which one this was, but I do know that God is willing to answer your own prayers. You can ask Heavenly Father personally if this was really a message from Him or not. You should be able to feel the answer in your heart - a positive answer will feel clear and peaceful, a negative answer will feel confused and troubled.
Find out for yourself.
Best wishes for you and your dad!

This man who claims to have spoken to God should be watched. If his "prophecy does not come through, have your mom look for another church, because the pastor is not a prophet.

God could speak to people. but we have no way of really knowing. A lot of crazy people kill other people because they think god spoke to them. It is very difficult to know god's plans but we have faith and trust and that is what makes our religion work.
