her vulva will begin to swell she may or may not start to hump your other pets or even you,she may act hyper or more playful than before or she might be a bit moody, this happens before she actually starts to bleed,it could take up to two weeks to only a few days after swelling starts before she will start to bleed

I agree with tlctreecare. Females are often in heat for about a month. On average they have a heat every 6 months. Definitely keep her away from other males... at night keep her in a crate as you will have less worries about having any accidental breedings while you sleep.
Swelling of the vulva and oozing liquid or blood. If she starts to turn her butt and/or spread her legs WATCH OUT!!! It is also possible for her to be a little more grumpy than usual but then again what female isn't that time of the month

If the dog is in heat her vulva will be swollen up and she will leak blood or fluid.
She may stand funny and show you her behind and move her tail off the side. Most times they will be dripping fluid or blood.
She will be in heat for three weeks then out for about 6 months and back in for three weeks every six months for the rest of her life.
If you are not palnning on breeding her get her spayed as it will lower her risk of mamary cancer and she will not ever get a pyometra, a uterine infection that they can die from if not caught in time.

well ... you can actually see the dog's hooha enlarged, sometimes. yuk. and it bleeds. more yuk. but also, the dog may want outside more often and/or it might rub its butt on the floor. haha. seriously, though, those are some clues. i had a friend whose dog was nicknamed Panties because they actually put women's panties on the dog when she went into heat. they didn't want to spay her because they were going to eventually breed her. but anyway, that's what happens. and by the way ... if your dog gets out even for 30 seconds, she'll be knocked up. beware.

My dog bleeds (but just a little) and she swells. She also licks herself A LOT more that usual and she becomes isolated. Sometimes, she mopes around looking sad.
