Public transportation sucks in LA. So everyone has a car. And even though Smog Checks are required to register your car, there are plenty of uninsured, unregistered cars out there adding to the problem.

It also has to do with weather conditions and the lay of the land. For instance, the San Fernando Valley gets really bad smog because the surrounding hills tend to trap the bad air in the valley.

Previous answers have been very good. Too many cars and mountains encircling much of the population which serves to trap the polluted air are the best answers.

If you're talking about air pollution, a big contributor is the fact that LA lies in a basin that traps dirty air. There are reports by early visitors to the area (Spanish) of dirty air over the area before it was industrialized.

Los Angeles has so much production going on and right now, more than ever. Because of the layout of the land in that area (which is low, based on Sea Level) and because of the fact that pollution is heavier than air, it of course falls right back down on the city. God, I love my wide open spaces. :) Larry

Because we have almost 1 car for every 1.5 people. We're in a valley that stops wind from clearing the smog away and the ocean doesn't help either

Stupid folk overdoing it on the cars. New Yorkers have no problem in using their feet or public transport. In LA, if you choose to walk somewhere you get looked at like you're mad. And the public transport is pretty lame and taxis are virtually a myth!

Millions and millions of cars. That's why I moved out of there 2 years ago. Fresh air, affordable housing, far, far less cars. And I'm still in California.
