Democracy and the free enterprise system are essential in the ways that Americans conduct their lives. First, we all believe in the free market system as a way to make money. On a daily basis, we choose to exchange our labor for money, and then exchange that money for goods and/or services that we want or need.

This is a value that is passed down through the generations. Think about parents requireing chores for allowance. Additionally, think about those same kids who start a lemonade stand so they can make extra money. In a different light, consider some places like Ebay, that allow free market forces to assign values to property.

Additionally democracy, that is the idea that the ruled has a voice in decisions that affect them. This goes far beyond the places of government and politics, but also into various other aspects of our lives. Consider popular TV shows like American Idol where the audience can vote for their favorite, or Survior where people get voted off the island.

We prefer to believe that any group, kniting club or county council should operate by allowing all persons to voice their opinion and the majority idea ends up being adopted.

In the U.S. we elect the person that best represents our views. Unless they commit a crime, they are given a full term to make changes that the people that voted for them wanted. The free enterprise system gives everyone the chance to compete for success and prosperity. The American dream is to be able to play by the rules, work hard, and be successful. This is without being born into wealth, fame, or power. You are only limited by how much you are willing to do to earn your success.
