There are no best cats, but there are certain things that come into play:
1) a de-sexed cat makes a better companion as they are more affectionate and want to spend time with you.
2) an indoor cat makes a better pet, as they are always there, waiting for you to play with them and they are definitely more affectionate because you are their whole world. Don't forget the health benefits of indoor cats, who live to about 18yrs - the average life-span of a cat who is allowed outdoors is 3yrs.
3) a cat that has been saved from the SPCA etc, somehow I feel that they 'know' that you have saved them!
4) if you do want a kitten, get one that has stayed with it's mother till AT LEAST 8 weeks, but 12 weeks would be the best. Kittens learn to be cats from their mom, and the longer that they can be with her, the better adjusted and well rounded they will be. Younger kittens may very well develop behavioural problems from being removed too young. Also, a younger kitten is more likely to develop health problems upon arriving at your home due to stress and the fact that their immune systems are not fully developed as they have been getting their necessary anti-bodies from mom's milk.
5) Go and pick out an older kitten (6 months and over) or cat from your local welfare. Kittens find homes easily, older cats struggle - because people seem to believe that an older cat will not adjust and love their new human. This is not true. An older cat has a fully developed personality, and has gotten over their destructive kitten stage, where they shred/maim everything in sight! If you go to the pound and there is an older kitty who lavishes you with affection - and jumps into your arms and wont stop purring, guarenteed, if you take him home he will love you FOREVER!
Good luck on finding a friendly kitty!

It depends on what kind of personality you are looking for.
Since purebreds tend to have more health problems, are more expensive, and contribute to the pet overpopulation (there are enough cats that need homes without us having to breed them), I would suggest going to a shelter or looking in the classifieds for people who have a litter of kittens (www.craigslist.org is always a good one). There is no 'best' breed (especially because most cats don't belong to one specific breed anymore and are just 'domestic shorthair' or 'domestic longhair'), it depends on the individual cat and how well you socialize it. Chose the kitten that seems to like you the most, treat him well, and you will have a friend for the rest of his life.
Before I got my cat, I knew I wanted one with some Persian or Himalayan in it, since they are so calm and I live in a small apartment. I found her on craigslist and she is part Himalayan, which ended up being perfect.
Good luck finding a friendly cat!

The best cat is the one you can bond with. I went and played with the kittens to pick the one that had the best personality or is that purr-sonality.
I like Siamese cats best because my grandmother used to breed them but many people hate Siamese. My first Siamese cat was super. He would ride on my shoulders, and was great in the car.

Any cat with four paws, two ears, and fur. I've heard the wives tales about males being friendlier. I have six females, and they're all lovable. Love your cat, treat it right and it will be your friend for it's whole life.
