Unless you have proof that you paid, the have a right to collect. There are two ways you could prove payment: a receipt from the bank or your canceled check. If they can't find the payment, I assume you don't have a receipt. If your check cleared your account, the bank can retrieve an image from their files. Then the transaction can be traced backwards to see if the funds were credited to the wrong account. If you can't produce a receipt or a copy of the canceled check, put a stop payment on the original check and write a replacement.

Do you have any proof of payment? A receipt? A cancelled check? Maybe a particular teller will remember you? Otherwise I'm afraid you'll have to make 2 pmts this months. next time make sure you keep up with a receipt

if you paid by check you can cancel the check and issue a new one. If by money order, you can have the bank cancel it and issue a new one. Sorry to say that you will be charged a fee but it is better than bad credit for nothing.

No, they have every right to try to get money that is rightfully theirs. Why not just write another check and stop payment on the first one? It may cost a few dollars, but at least your credit score won't be affected.
