along w/getting my cat spayed, she's also gotta have an abortion. it's not something i want to do, but it has to be done, as i can't afford the babies. when i went to my vet's office to inquire about getting her spayed, they at first told me that noone in the state would do a spay/abortion procedure, and then, when i told them that i had found a reputible vet in another city that would, and that i needed my cat's vacinations record, the look i got from the receptionist was one of disgust and abhorance that i was getting it done. the vet is a fundamentalist christian, and he knows his animals, but should i say anything to him about having been lied to about the procedure, and what should i say to his receptionist? also, why would she be looking at me like that in the first place, if they do spay/neuters for the humane society?

Getting your cat an abortion. I think that's pretty sad. It's not like a $9000 hospital bill or anything. Would think the time, hassle and expense of a kitty abortion would cost as much.

Sounds like you are getting bad information from the receptionist. I work for a vet and we will do a spay on a cat unless it is very close to the time for the kittens to be born. There is an increase in the price, due to the vet having to spend more time doing the surgery. We don't make judgments on people that need to have the kittens aborted. Are you going to have him do it or are you going some place else? I wouldn't say anything to the receptionist unless you plan to go to another vet, she can make life difficult for you if you ever need to come back.

There are people strongly opposed to abortion, even for animals. (I'm not fond of the idea myself, but it's sometimes a tragic necessity.) As the client you have the right to choose any veterinarian you like to do any legal procedure. Your veterinarian doesn't have to tell you where you can get something done, but an actual lie is not acceptable. He *does* have to provide copies of your cat's medical records on request.
In addition to ethical issues, there are additional medical risks to spaying a pregnant cat - usually not insurmountable, but enough that many veterinarians won't do it, or are very reluctant, even if they're not some kind of religious nut. The vet and receptionist are entitled to their opinion but should be reasonably civil about it.

I would find another vet once you have had this procedure taken care of out of town. Is your vet willing to supply you with kitten food and free vaccinations and can they guarentee that they will find homes for all of these kittens where they will be loved and looked after? I don't think so! You are doing what's right for your animal, that's what counts! So many people let their pets breed indiscriminately, without any concern for where the babies will end up!
and to BB, I hear where you are coming from, but no-one who answered this question said anything about human abortion being wrong and kitty abortion being ok!?! If you want to rant, perhaps find the right people to vent at...

Get a different vet.
Obviously their religion is overflowing to their business. There are too many unwanted pets in the United States and they are either starving or abused. You're trying to do the right thing and they are being very judgemental, you're not the one having the abortion. And all they need to do is the procedure and take your money. Not make judgements on your decisions.

hold your head up! you are not asking them to do anything that is uncommon.go to a vet where you are comfortable. There are just too many out there to go where you are made to feel that way! Your animals should be your only worry. Many cats and dogs get spayed everyday and many owners never even know their animal was pregnant in the first place.

It's over, right? I assume you're not still standing in the vet's office with the receptionist looking at you. Take the records and go do what has to be done.

The receptionist is totally out of line. She is there to serve the people who have concerns and are bringing animals to her boss. I guess it is the vet's choice to take his stand.
You can always find another vet for the cat and you don't ever have to mention this with him again.
It's a very sensitive and emotional issue for many people. I have my opinions and I don't going around pushing people's buttons about it.

OOOOHHHHHH its ok if a cat does it but if a human does it you guys are all over their a s s es like they killed your puppy, you guys are twisted only reason you guys are against human abortion is because you relate to human as yourself and something that you dont agree for yourself to do,but a cat, something that we cant identically relate to, you say its ok cause you dont think of it to be something even close to yourself this is the time you give clear headed thoughts and opinions so now we know how clear headed people think about abortions, if you need to do it then do it, but before with the humans it was mainly dont do it even if you had been raped. pathetic

I think it is unethical to withhold any services that are deemed legal and acceptable simply due to his personal beliefs. Does he turn away cliet's who have animals that they want put to sleep, but in his opinion may live a good life (Schiavo style)? It's complete bullcrap in my opinion and i think you should file a complaint against him. The other vet that does do the procedure may have a better idea as to how to do that. What a crock.
