This passage was directed to the Corinthians' Church that had a few problems in the church. Paul was helping them. Yes it is God's Word, but it must still be applied appropriately. In order to sort these things out you have to also note that the Bible includes numerous accolades for women active in ministry such as Miriam, Mary, Mary Magdalene, Lydia, Dorcas, Phoebe, Ruth and many many more. Obviously the Bible hails the contributions of women, and deals both globally and locally with issues. It also makes clear the difference between precepts and incidental guidelines.

Your last sentence about following God has a ring of truth. There would be a great tragedy in failing to read the Bible. However, it is the Lord who opens our eyes to the truths in it, and without His influence, it is of no use.

Let me start by saying that I believe that the Bible is truly the word of one true, and living God. Now...I don't refute the Bible or its teaching, but those that teach it. You have to look beyond simply what is said in Corinthians and get into what was going on in Corinth at that time. That book was written to the Corinthians, not to Romans or Egyptians for a particular reason. In the book of Judges, we find that there was a female judge who judged Israel. "Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappidoth, was leading Israel at that time." Judges 4:4 Deborah was a prophetess, a female prophet.

Here is something that I found on the net...
"Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law" (1 Corinthians 14:34).

"Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence" (1 Timothy 2:11-12).

In these verses, Paul cannot be addressing women who were in the ministry, but rather those in the congregation who were out of order. How do we know this? We have many such proofs, many from Paul himself. Here is a partial list of women who were all in influential positions of leadership in the early church.

Pheobe (Romans 16:1-2): This woman was a deaconess of the church in Cenchrea, who was beloved of Paul and many other Christians for the help she gave to them. She filled an important position of leadership. It would be a difficult stretch of the imagination to say that this woman fulfilled her duties without ever speaking in the church!

Priscilla (Acts 18:26): Priscilla and her husband Aquila are often mentioned with great respect by Paul. Together they were pastors of a church in Ephesus, and were responsible for teaching the full gospel to Apollos. We are informed that they both taught Apollos, and pastored the church together. In fact, Priscilla is sometimes listed ahead of Aquila when their names come up. This has led some to speculate that of the two, she was the primary teacher and her husband oversaw the ministry. At any rate, we see here a woman in a very prominent position of teaching and pastoring. (Other references to Priscilla and Aquila are Acts 18:2, 18; Romans 16:3, and I Corinthians 16:19).

Euodia and Syntyche (Philippians 4:2-3): Here we see reference to two women who were "true yokefellow" and who labored with Paul in the advancement of the gospel.

Junia (Romans 16:7): In this verse we see Paul sending greetings to Andronicus and Junia, his "fellow-prisoners" who are of note among the apostles. Junia is a woman's name. In some modern translations, an "s" has been added (Junias) because the translators were so sure a woman could not be an apostle, that they assumed a copyist has accidentally dropped the "s." However the proper male ending would have been "ius," not "ias." No church commentator earlier than the Middle Ages questioned that Junia was both a woman and an apostle.

I think you forgot to quote, Paul's liberation! ya know the Paul's lib verse

'In Christ there is neither Jew nor greek, slave nor free, male nor female' When Paul said this he probably had in mind the prayer he said as a child of 'thank God i am not a gentile, a slave or a woman' and was liberated from

Men and women have different roles at times, but are in no way inferior or superior to eachother Ultimately the Bible lifts up the roles and value of both men and women.

in fact if you set a standard that says a woman has to be more like a man to be valued OR a man has to be more like awoman to be valued... well... you devalue them and feminism becomes self defeating and ultimately self destructive

I would think so, that's one of the examples clearly specified in the Bible if you consider that God allowed women raped and your little children slaughtered.

From God’s so called Bible - Isaiah 13:15-18

“Anyone who is captured will be run through with a sword. Their little children will be dashed to death right before their eyes. Their homes will be sacked and their wives raped by the attacking hordes. For I will stir up the Medes against Babylon, and no amount of silver or gold will buy them off. The attacking armies will shoot down the young people with arrows. They will have no mercy on helpless babies and will show no compassion for the children.”

How any decent person can believe and follow the Bible is beyond imagination, seems like religious people just ignore the bits they dislike and twist the rest into a happy delusion, much like the behaviour of drug addicts.

What's more sexist than allowing women raped?

Catholocism is man made doctrine, it is not Christian absolutes. The verse you picked only demonstrates that men and woman have different roles . One is not better then the other. The Bible says the man is the head of the woman just as God is the head of christ. Christ and God are equal in substance, but different in roles. Get it.

Why doesnt anyone post the Bible passages on how nasty men are and the nasty things that will happen to them? It would be SO nice to see people read the whole book and not just a few quips they want to find offensive.
