that may be the majority of america, but me personally I enjoy dogs better...cats look too mean! They can claw you to death...and dogs can't really do that! I love dogs, and I would never get a cat!

So what, you met 30 families in Europe, that is not all of Europe. Besides the French are cat people. Cats are easier to take care of and are able to adjust more easily to new surroundings than their dog counterparts. Plus cats are loyal, playful, and have a quiet dignity that a yipping dog does not have. Cats are naturally more intelligent by design. One will not see a team of cats harnessed to a sled pulling some human acrossed an arctic wasteland, it is the stupid dog that will adhere to that call. My cats always know when I am not feeling emotionally well and try to comfort me. I do like dogs. I like all animals and believe in their protection, well, I lie...I do not like snakes..kill all the snakes you like.

North Americans feline owners didn't have the negative long-standing history of fear about them like their European and other country counterparts. Cats were considered perfect vermin controllers for the American farmers. Despite being the most popular species of pets, cats have over the centuries been the target of myths, folklore, and more recently, "urban legends." While some of the stories are sympathetic to cats, others have been borne of the imaginations of those who distrust or fear cats.
Americans have found that cats are also considered a lower maintenance pet--they don't need to be walked, bathed, groomed, managed daily if going away for a few days trip, etc like a dog. So this gives them the option to have a pet animal that suits their lifestyle needs too.
All animals actually have different levels of intelligence factors. Dogs and cats are different because of their natural abilities to distinguish their capabilities to learn based on their instinctive behaviours. Dogs are also more apt to please their masters and try to do what is asked of them if they are rewarded in return. Cats however do things because they are barterers--"if I do this for you what will you give me". We have seen evidence of this in the movies and commercials. Felines work for food rewards rather than just praise only like so many canines can do.
Animal trainers learn to understand the species of each animal in order to train them to learn new behaviours. This is why we are so amazed at some of the things people have taught their animals and believe it's because it must be the animal who is just smart--it's really the trainer understanding the animals natural abilities then extending that further to amaze us.

Well....I'm an American, and I can tell you why I love cats.
I disagree about dogs being more intelligent. I like cats because they seem to truly be little induviduals. Dogs are very friendly and playful and somewhat goofy. And if they're not, then they're usually shy or mean. Cats aren't as easy to make friends with. They have attitude. They do what they wanna do and that's pretty cool. It also makes it that much better when you DO bond with them. They have a truly intelligent, knowing look in their eyes. Also, they're much easier to care for.

Americans are usually very busy people and having a cat for a pet makes it easy for them. Cats basically take care of themselves, don't need to be walked, don't care if anyone is home or not. I hope that answers your question. I'm a dog person also!

Cats are just as intelligent as a dog. You can't compare the intelligence of dogs with the intelligence of cats. It's like comparing apples to oranges.
My cats come running to the door everyday when I come home from work. They sleep with me at night as well as greeting me every morning. They are also quite protective of me. If they hear something outside they perk up and will go to the area where they hear the noise. In fact, I have one cat that growls when she hears a dog bark or when she hears a baby cry or a small child making a lot noise outside. My cats are definitely playful and loving but they just show it differently than dogs.
With cats, I don't have to let them out just to go to the bathroom and I don't get their slobber all over me. Don't get me wrong, I like dogs too but I just prefer cats.

well, think of it this way, if we didn't domesticate cats then there'd be millions and millions MORE running around, reproducing 10x more than they do now (which is A LOT) and getting killed.
Cats are good pets because they're not a lot of work and provide companionship for people who choose to have them as pets. Sure, you can't walk them or play fetch with them (well, some of them you can!) but they're nice to have around. Plus, for people who keep them indoors (which SHOULD be all owners but sadly is not) they are safe from predators and accidents like getting hit by a car. Also for older people, cats make great company, especially people in nursing homes. Cats are just great company all around.

Have you ever owned a cat?
I love dogs, but first of all they are rediculously hard to care for, more expensive, and very needy. They make more messes, a lot of them smell like cr*p, and they have to go outside to poop (unless they go on your carpet, or on your bed, or by the door).
To say that cats aren't happy when their owners come home, aren't playful, aren't loving, loyal and intelligent makes you sound like an idiot. You most likely haven't ever been around cats, because I can guarantee you they fulfill all those things, so why bother going out of your way to post that.

Cats are more intelligent then dogs, because they are able to grip with the fact that you went on vacation and will come back, dogs can't handle that, I think America likes cats better b/c you don't have to wake up in the early morning to let them out to do their business. But, I like all animals(not roaches!!!EWE!!).

You don't know what you are talking about. Most Americans like dogs better. A lot of Americans have cats though because we treat our animals like humans and love all animals equally.
