I have an automatic oven that automatically turns on to 500 degrees to broil. Then you can adjust. Is 500 the normal broiling temp?

500 degrees is the norm and you can adjust the rack farther/closer to the grill. Ideally if you could adjust temp of the grill, 350 degrees is the ideal cooking temp to do the slow cook to keep meat tender

depending on how close food sits to the heating element that can be bit too close. Just try a chicken breast some time and watch it at 30 second intervals to see what happens. If the outside starts to burn or crisp before the center is done the heat is too high.

I don't have one of those but this should tell you where you're at with it.

On all the ovens I've ever used. Just set it on broil, and watch your food it cooks quickly in the broiler.
