My wife and I are going to Hawaii without kids and are looking to have a GOOD (adult) time. We might have a place to stay on the Big Island for very cheap (Kona?) but want an active nightlife. Also would like to see some dudes ride some big waves. Probably going to go this winter, maybe February. Money is an issue but not too much.

Thanks

Why go to Hawaii if you want what you have at home? You can go out and party any where.
Go to big Island. Learn to enjoy life (and party) way the locals do.
Believe me since I still live Hawaii, Big Island around Kona has some great spots for night life.
Sorry no big waves to speak of around Kona.

OAHU!! I spent 8 days 7 nights there and wasn't ready to leave. We didn't get to do the night swimming that we say because of the jellyfish. Remember, 9-10 days after a full moon, they have box jellyfish and won't hold any snorkeling. We found that out the day we planned on going, If you are going in the summer, there are not many surfing waves, those come in the winter months (no waves while we were then in June, even on the North Shore). It costs a lot more to island hop and you can spend a lot of time on just one island. I've heard the Big Island is neat to see the crackling lava, but other than that, it's hard to stay on for long. I think you should go to OAHU We stayed at the Ihilani and it was AMAZING!! We went snorkeling (for free) on property and saw turtles 2 different times. Also, I recommend you buy the "Revealed" book for whichever island you choose, we bought Oahu, Revealed and it was soooo helpful!!

I just returned from my honeymoon to the Big Island and Oahu. I have to say, we really enjoyed Kona much more than Oahu. Waikiki Beach was really busy and full of tourists. Kona may not have the night life, but we regretted leaving so early to visit such a big city. You can get that big city feeling in many other places. Its all shopping, eating and beach. I saw surfers in both Kona and Waikiki. We also visited the Volcano National Park on the Big Island, so that's something you can do. The Big Island is much more unique and quiet. If you really want night life, Oahu might be for you. If you want a vacation and a relaxing time in a beautiful place, I would suggest the Big Island.

If you go to Oahu, don't miss Pearl Harbor!

I was born and raised in Hawaii. If you go to the Big Island to the city of Kona it's very Hawaii country. You won't find alot of night life there. The Big Island is more a relaxing even romantic vacation. Now, if you go to Oahu you will be sure to find great night life and on the infamous North Shore where all the great surfers go is located on Oahu. Waikiki on Oahu has all the night life, tons of bars, clubs, great restaurants, etc. Now just because you are staying in Oahu, the island full of excitement doesn't mean you can't have romantic adult time. There are hotels away from Waikiki, so when you feel like it you can get away from all of it. A great place like that would be JW Marriott Ko' Olina resort. It's far from the action when you want to get away but about a 35 min drive if you feel like a good night out having fun. I'd personally choose Oahu.

Oahu, definitely! The Big Island has little to no real adult activities. I was born and raised on Oahu and even I can tell you that the Big Island is b-o-r-i-n-g at night. It's a fantastic island for seeing things (ie: an active volcano, beautiful waterfalls, black sand beaches, etc.), but not at night. If you decide to go to Oahu, here are some not-so-known to tourists places you could go to and not break your wallet: Ko'Olina Resort and Hotel has the most tranquil lagoons you can find and the water is crystal clear. It's out west and far away from all the other tourists. Paradise Cove is one of the best night time luaus you can go to and it's in the same area as Ko'Olina. If you like boats, I would go on the Ali'i Kai Catamaran night cruise. It's a great time. For your HUGE wave watching, Waimea Bay is the definite place to be and if you go there, at night, right across the street is Waimea Falls Park which is also great...I hope this is helpful. Enjoy your time there!

If you are looking for an active night life avoid the Big Island. Kona rolls up its sidewalks at 9:00. It is very much a small town.

The most active night activities will be in Waikiki on Oahu. Clubs, bars, etc. Plus you can drive to the North Shore of Oahu and watch the surfers on Pipeline Beach and the other north beaches. Winter is the best time to go.

Enjoy.

Kona has a lot of activity and is a great place to go. It is much more laid back than Oahu. A friend told me once that the chemical composition of Waikiki Beach is 40% cigarette ash. There are more tourist attractions on Oahu such as the Punch Bowl, the Polynesian Cultural Center and the Arizona Memorial. Plus, the North Shore (not close to Waikiki) is where there is lots of great surfers. But, the Big Island has the volcanoes, Mauna Kea, great beaches, the Parker Ranch, the Southernmost Point and is much more laid back. If I could only go to one island, I would pick Maui. Hope this helps.

There are more activity and people on Oahu than the other islands.. All the tourists and hotels are concentrated in Waikiki on Oahu. You can often see many people walking on the streets in Waikiki and at the beach. But you may not see that on the Big Island because there are far fewer people, hotels and buildings there. It is more of a quiet place with great nature, landscape, scenery and volcanoes... Oahu has more people, cars and buildings.. There are also some parts of the Oahu island that are more quiet and has fewer people.

Oahu. Because there is so much to see there then you can go to Maui. that is another good place to go. In oahu is the waikiki beach, the banana fields. north side of the island for surfing, there is the grave yard national. there is a marine base to see and navy base and air force base they are all there. There is diamond head to see and the pineapples that grow there. there are many places to shop and the airport to buy leis they are cheaper there. the kolakola pass where the plane came in and bombed up in pearl harbor also there is the arzona ship sunk and the tour you can get. so much and then move on to another island.

Go to Oahu. You will get the awesome beach (Waikiki) and the great nitelife of Honolulu. Much more for you to do on Oahu. Make sure if you go to Oahu. Go to the swao meet at aloha stadium to get all your souverniers. You wont regret it. And take a trip to the North Shore and visit Matamusos to get a shaved ice. Truly an island experience.
