I was not meaning if LDS are Christian. I am saying how can one be considered a Christian when their beliefs differ? Is there exact criteria, or is it just whether or not you feel you are a Christian?

Its actually very simple. Not all people think and believe the same things. So it is only reasonable that different sects, divisions, etc of the same religion have been created over the years. I have a Catholic background. Some Catholics are very liberal, God know why they even still are Catholic. But many Catholics still follow the rule of the church to a t. If you are LDS, heck there are still Polygmists from the old church around correct?
Again, people think differently. One can hear the same words and take a different meaning than you or I. Group A does things this way, Group B does things their way. And as long as they are good people teaching and doing the right things, thats ok.

There is a wide variety in what Christians believe the Bible is. Some think that it is all true, others think that it is all allegorical. Some believe it is the inerrant word of God, others believe that it is only the writings of man. Some think that God's word is timeless and doesn't change, others think that God is ever changing to fit a changing society. When there is a part that is hard to understand, different denominations try to explain it differently. People often pick and choose what they like and ignore what they don't like. Many people believe in a god, but want make him in their own image.
Different denominations also place different emphasis on what is the final authority to them. For example, for some it is God's Word as revealed only in the Bible. For others it might be "the church," the "elders," or a person. Some denominations add further writings to the Bible which they say are as valid as the Bible itself. While still others believe that God talks to them individually, personally revealing new things to them.
Thankfully through all this mess, God actually does come through sometimes and there are some true Christians scattered around.

I agree with alot of the above, Christians dont have to agree point for point, you have to love truth to have a saving faith, but people are fallible and will not perfectly understand truth. All Christians will differ to some degree as they glorify God leaning on the work of Christ on the cross, believing for eternal life All Christians are saved in Jesus words in John 17:3 by knowing God (in a saving way) so whats the difference?

There is a great deal of commonality, protestants and catholics agree on many stunning truths and will disagree on some issues like Mary, the role of grace and works in justification and explainations of what happens at communion

some disagreements are over style, authority, church government and are a matter of personal concience and others are larger. Alot of liberalism for example is radical skeptisism...

some matter not so much
some matter alot

some boils down to you primary area of trust
- scripture (evangelicals and reformed probably here)
- tradition (catholic often is here)
- popular views and wisdom (liberalism)
- feelings (some charasmatics might be prone to this)

some groups have considerable differences
and not so easy to reconsile
- JW's believe Jesus is a created angel, Michael the angel
- many mormons believe in God and Mrs God of the earth who were mormons from another planet who achieved godhood
I forget if LDS is this type... most Utah mormons would be
- Christian Science denies the reality of any evil

These sort of things are probably pretty far past what Orthodox Christians are willing to consider and probbaly cant be supported in the scriptures

It is because there is not one "Christiian denomination, but a whole slew of them.

For example the Luthern's have their teachings, the Methodist have theirs, the Episcapalians have thiers, the Southern Baptist have theirs, the 7th Day Baptist have theirs,.............................
the list could go on for a long time.

Many of the churches have a history traceable back to the Catholic church. Until recent history (couple hundred years) the Bible was not available for the public to read. Once it became available people began reading it.
A group of people would find something "new" in the Bible that was not being taught and a new denomination would start.

Sadly enough they became so focused on the doctrine they had discovered that they no longer continued to search. So the story repeated itself.

This to some extent is still going on today. The majority of the people only hear what pleases them. There are a few out there that are still searching the Bible.

First let me state that LDS is a not a christian group. I want you to understand this that GOD dose not consider your or my opions. I am evangalist that preaches the King James Bible. Jesus stated in John 14. 6 That he is the only way to the Father.. Period. If you can't believe that my friend your enternal resting place will be in HELL. A friend of mine died a couple of months ago as a LDS. Today he burns in HELL. I'm more about the truth. As to your Question about differences. Over in Mat. it states that the way of the rightous ( BORN AGAIN ) into Heaven will be few yet the lost Or those ( NOT BORN AGAIN) will be many. God called that shot not me. As my years dim I see this coming true everyday. I do pray that before you take your last breath, you've found out that I tell the truth. Love In Christ, Evagalist J Kelly

Within Christianity there are many denominations. (insert long spiel here about political, historical, and theological reasoning for the various splits) Each denomination believes the same basic thing - there is one God, Jesus is the Son of God, Jesus lived on this earth, died for our sins, and was resurrected to triumph over sin and final death - but they all differ in the details.

I think it's a good thing in many ways. Each denomination has strengths and weaknesses and we could all learn a lot from each other.

Not at all, because you're dealing with a fantasy imaginary state of the mind, sometimes referred to as mental illness. You can believe whatever you wish in such a state, and always be right or wrong, whatever you decide is appropriate.

The Bible is really just a fake story, perhaps a bit like the Loch Ness monster tales. When we pass on information to another (example: story, joke, description of something etc) by the time these details are passed on by word of mouth, interpreted by others, and then written down, the final details are typically quite different than the original information.

Since the Bible is just a man-made story passed down over many years in various forms, the chance of it being accurate in any shape or form is remote.

There are people who swear blind that the Loch Ness monster exists regardless of all the evidence to the contrary, but a fence post bobbing up and down in the Loch does the trick. Similarly there are people who swear blind that God exists and the Bible is fact, yet there isn’t one blind bit of evidence to support such theories.

Biblical tales are really no different than Loch Ness monster tales, just the era is different.

No religion is the correct one, and all religions have got it wrong. There are many major religions in the world, such as Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Judaism, and so on. Within each major religion there can also be many minor religions. For example, within Christianity there is Catholic, Protestant, Anglican and so on. Within Islam there is Shiite, Sunni etc.

In summary there are many hundreds of different religions in the world all with their devoted believers and followers. Talk to any devout religious person and they will almost emphatically insist that their religion is the right one, it’s fact, and any non-believer is doomed.

Commonsense and logic would suggest that if there was any truthful or factual basis to religion, then only one of these religions could be correct, not all of them. However, in my view, it’s highly unlikely that any of these man-made religions bear any resemblance to fact or the truth, and are more likely to be the result of simplistic human intelligence looking for an escape from reality.

Same as why some sectors of Christianity do not have electricity, do not believe in going to see the doctor, ect. It all depends on where you live and how you were raised. Yes I do consider the Amish people to be christian.

don't LDS consider themselves Christians? don't you accept the OT and NT just like other Christians? Is this your way of saying the other Christians should also accept the Book of Mormon?

It's not odd at all, it's very "Christian" of them.
