Much of our energy requirement is provided by the breakdown of carbohydrates, found in foods such as bread and potatoes, into sugars. The most common sugars obtained from food are glucose, fructose and galactose.

Cells obtain energy from glucose by breaking it down into a substance called pyruvic acid. The energy released by this process is temporally stored as a high energy compound, APT.
