I'm struggling to work out what features unique to Pro most home users would want to use?
For me unless you have to heavy weight deployment requirements, then Home will do most people just fine, at less money. I bet there aren't many times a day that a some one using Pro uses something exclusive to that version (realise it or not).
SyncToy has got around the problem of offline folders but what else is there? Remote desktop perhaps? VNC does the job there for free!
So the answer is XP Home is best (better value for money)

Deano,
This is a question that has been asked by technology enthusiasts ever since Windows XP was released unto the general public. The real question here, however, is which version of Windows XP is best for the type of user. No two Windows XP users are the same; each have their own uses for the operating system.
Windows XP Home is best for the home user (of course) who wishes to share multimedia and communicate with family members. Many home users also enjoy Home Edition since it has a tendency to take up less hard disk space than both Professional and Media Center Edition.
Windows XP Professional is best used in a business setting, since it includes the Microsoft Office production suite (or Corel WordPerfect, depending on manufacturer). Even though it tends to use more disk space, the program also requires less RAM than Home, increasing office productivity and streamlining the work load.
Windows XP Media Center is specifically designed for the multimedia fanatic, such as homebrew filmmakers, musicians, and gamers. This became especially apparent after the release of the Microsoft Xbox 360, with the introduction of downloadable arcade games. The introduction of a DVR program into Media Center requires more disk space but, in turn, also eliminates the need for hard storage of DVD and VHS cases altogether.
The point is that Windows XP is great, no matter what kind of user you are. The question of which version is best is that of the user themselves.
I hope this answers your question, Deano. Be sure and keep them coming!
Thanks,
David Ward
P.S. I personally prefer Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition, since I use it to do all of my daily work.

Professional has all the features Home Edition has, and more.
The main reason Home Edition exists is because some people can't afford Professional.
And with Professional, you can get 64-bit version free if you have a 64-bit enabled processor.

If you asking this question, the Windows XP Home Edition is better for you.
If you have some tasks that can not be done under Windows XP HE - you may install Windows XP PE. But I do not recommend you to buy more expensive and overbloated Windows XP PE if you will newer use its unique functions.

not too sure if anyone has mentioned that on home edition, you can only join it to a workgroup whereas on professional edition, you can join it to a domain (which most companies use) and workgroups.
Workgroups are generally use in home networks whereas the domains are what businesses use for their networks.
Home edition also doesn't include Remote Desktop features that Pro does. useful if you want to remotely connect to other machines on the network, or in the world if you have the IP address!
Personally, if you don't need to join a domain, or use remote desktop, and its just really for a home pc, i don't see why home edition shouldn't be enough!
Hope that helps along with what everyone else has put!

I say that Professional edition is better but I would also say that Home edition could be, I got both copys and there isnt really that much difference. I would probably say Professional though.
