No, it's not true! Opened blankets are swapped out when they service the plane between flights. They are sent to a laundry and cleaned, sanitized, and repackaged. Just like hotels clean the towels and sheets in your hotel rooom.
(OK, the comforter is another matter. Don't get me going on that!)

They should, for the price they charge for a ticket. But hotels don't wash bedspreads either. They showed a special on 48 hours once where they went into some major hotels with a black light and dna kit, and found body fluids on all the beds tested.

I am guessing that does not happen very often if ever. The two dirtiest things I know of are an airplane blanket and a hotel bedspread. You would find fewer germs on a toilet seat.

They are typicaly clean. Pathogens, well it is possible. Depending upon the person who handed it to you, or while stowing items above the touched the blankets... it is possible. But I think you are rather safe.... I would be more conserned about the toilet onboard than the blanket. 8)
