Hate to tell you, but you'll have to do the most of the work yourself. If there is another person researching the same line as you, and they've posted their findings, it may or may not be accurate.

Start clicking on sites until you find one where someone else has done some work on your family. It may not be correct, but there is probably someone else with the same ancestors out there.

www.familysearch.com
www.ancestry.com

You can search for your ancestors on both of these sites, and others. This will probably require more than just simply looking up your family unless a relative has already done this work, done it correctly (quite often a big question), and posted it to these locations.

If your family came through Ellis Island you can also go to that website and search for immigration records. I found my grandparents that way but only after extensive searches and then only by also looking for my uncle, who was an infant. The problem was that my grandfather's name had been spelled incorrectly (very common) and the family wasn't listed together.

Good luck and have fun. This can become a lifelong hobby.

Some of the others have given you good advice and places to look on the Internet but really you do need to do the ground work yourself.

The first rule in researching your family tree is to start with yourself and then add your parents and siblings. Then go back another generation and add your grandparents on both sides of your family and your mother and fathers siblings (brothers and sisters).

The you can get your great-grandparents by doing the same thing. And then back another to your 2nd Great-Grandparents and so on until you actually find the person(s) in your family that arrived in the US first.

Once you get to that point you would lave leads to where they came from and you can then concentrate on that area to search for them in the old country.

Some of the information placed on the Internet is not correct and you need to prove each person as you put them on the tree, this is done by vital records....this means - baptism, birth, death and marriage certificates or entries in parish records etc.

The LDS (Morman) site is excellant but you need to know whho you are looking for and just a hint - not all counties and parishes have been put onto microfiche or CD, especially in the UK, so beware of that. Also I have found some members of the Morman church have made errors when they have researched a family and placed it onto the IGI (International Genealogical Index.)

Start collecting the information and good luck.

Here are some large free sites. I save this and paste it because people ask the same question 1 - 4 times a day, either in Genealogy or somewhere else. If you search or browse the resolved questions in the genealogy category, you can find more links from other people.

Unless your cousin/aunt/grandmother has done the resaerch and uploaded it, you'll have to do research yourself.

http://www.cyndislist.com/
(240,000+ links, all cross-indexed.)

http://www.familysearch.com
(Mormon's mega-site)

http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi
(450,000,000+ entries, some excellent, some bad, most in between)

http://www.ancestry.com/learn/facts/default.aspx?ln=
Surname meanings and origins; no specific individuals, but fun.

These are for the USA only:

http://www.usgenweb.net/
(Subdivided into state sites, which all have county sites.)
(Canada has a Canadian Gen Web, with sites for each province.)

http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi
(Social Security Death index - click on "Advanced".)

http://find.person.superpages.com/
(US Phone book, for looking up distant cousins)

If you get serious, you should probably buy a genealogy program. I like Roots Magic. Family Tree Maker is very popular. Both are $29, but you can sometimes find old versions in discount bins at software stores.

It's not guaranteed that you'll find something there but they're good places to search.
